I am applying to Yale early action and I'm supposed to submit all forms by November 1, which is making me a little confused. How do I submit a FAFSA if it is released in January? Do I just use the one from the year before?

EDIT:
Hmm its strange how they have that, but in this link it says you just need to estimate some of the information. Also, scroll to the bottom, and you’ll see that they mention they don’t need the FAFSA initially to determine your financial aid eligibility, so I am guessing that you don’t send them FAFSA in November.

No, you cannot use FAFSA from the previous year. Once FAFSA is available, I would recommend submitting an estimated FAFSA as soon as reasonable rather than waiting for taxes to be completed. You can make corrections to FAFSA online once taxes are finalized.

While FAFSA is not available until Jan 1, the Profile comes online in Oct. I would recommend filling out the Profile with estimates by the Nov. 1 deadline so that you can get at tentative FA package. Corrections to the Profile are more of a hassle as they are usually hard copy, but I would not recommend waiting.

Do the Profile using your best estimates and do it in time for the school to RECEIVE it by the Nov 1 deadline. Typically this means two weeks prior to when the deadline is.

Then do the FAFSA on January 1 using your best estimates. That is the first day the FAFSA for the upcoming year can be done.

Check to make sure that Yale has EVERYTHING they request by the deadlines indicated.

thanks to everyone! all the answers were a great help! so I’ll fill out the Profile when it comes out in time so Yale can receive it by the Nov 1 deadline and then do the FAFSA on January 1

You MUST find out Yale’s specific financial aid requirements, forms and deadlines and don’t miss them!! In general, thumper is right, get the PROFILE done before deadline and FAFSA as soon after 1/1 as possible…but many of these schools also have their OWN forms in addition to FAFSA and PROFILE to complete, so doublecheck that on their website and/or contact Yale’s FA dept. for specific guidance…

That EVERYTHING means just that…everything that Yale (or any other school) requires. The schools will not process your financial aid until they have ALL of it…and if you miss a deadline you risk getting a financial aid award at some places. DO NOT MISS DEADLINES…and SEND EVERYTHING each school requests.
