Applying Early Decison- I NEED to be rejected. Please Read.

My parents are forcing me to apply ED to Carnegie, but the worst part is....they are not going to pay for it. I DO want to go to Carnegie, I just don't think I can pay for it if I want to get in. It's a really long story. This sounds like a request you don't get often but, is there a change I can get rejected?

Also, my parents are VERY active in my admission process, so I have to apply legit. I can't throw my application.

So, I'm applying to the school of engineering as a Computer Engineer Major.

SAT:

MATH: 720
CR: 590
W: 590

SATII:
Math I: 560
Math II: 550
Chem: 570

ACT: 25.

Class Rank:
14/140

GPA:
97.1(Weighted)

AP's:

Euro,US:3
Chem: 2
STAT: 5

CommunityService: 400+ hours.

President of 1 club. Treasurer of few clubs. VP of another club.

No Sports.

Semi-Excellent Letters of Recommendation.

___________________EDIT_________________________

Also, I have a decent essay. My community service and ec's are really good. Are you able to come to a decision based on my numbers?

Your test scores are low and you don’t seem to have taken many challenging courses in math and science so I think it is very likely you will be rejected if you look at the stats of other students who apply for the Engineering school you are below par

I’m currently taking:

AP Physics
AP Calc
AP Bio
AP Enlgish Lit
AP Gov

I took every single AP my school has to offer :frowning: I took only Honors/Ap classes in high school. Sadly, I did take all the challenging math/science classes. But my SAT scores are low, especially for engineering, so thats good…right?

(Sorry, I just has a really awkward moment. I never thought I would be happy when being told I would get rejected.)

Even if you do get accepted, you can always explain your specific financial situation to admissions. I would assume that admissions would be understanding and wouldn’t try to screw you over with respect to other Universities if you simply can’t pay for tuition.

Your ACT/SAT scores are not very good for CMU, the GPA I guess is OK, if you did well freshman year, freshman year GPA is not counted.
I’d say just judging from your SAT/ACT/SATII scores, you won’t get in. Your EC’s aren’t that great also.

If you want to gaurentee rejection, just throw the essay right before you send it out, I doubt your parents will watch you send out everything. If you are worried that your parents will read your essay before sending, just cut it in half and say you didn’t know that happened. Create a crappy essay that doesn’t insult CMU, like (**** this ****, i dont care about this app), but just make it incredibly bad and rushed.

Apply to only 1 school also, instead of 4.
If you have alumni, do not mention them.
Get an interview, and just do really bad on it.

There are many different ways to throw an app.

EDIT: I believe your SATII Math and SATI Math subject test scores are probably enough for rejection, especially to a top notch school like CMU’s engineering program. 550 is REALLY bad. My 800 on the math is 88%, which means that 12% of all test takers get an 800, so getting a 550 is gonna hurt you a lot. Also, my friend got a 790 on the SATII Chem which isn’t even 90th percentile (for his group), so a 570 chem isn’t good.

My 640 LIt is better than 66% of all seniors, which isn’t very good at all. To give you a better idea.

Do you know what’s your EFC? You can run the fin-aid calculator on the CMU web site if you haven’t done so. And since they are not willing to pay for your education, who do they expect to pay for you? Obviously, the max you can borrow is $5,500/year and, let say in a rosy way, you can earn $3,000/year. That’s only $8K which is peanuts in terms of CMU COA. Even if you have full needs met, which could be the case why your folks force the ED thing, it doesn’t mean you’re all paid. Your actual needs and what CMU defines your needs are are two different things.

Also, in terms of admissions, look at this page and it will give you a very good idea:

[Admission > Admission Statistics](<a href=“Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University”>Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University)

You have such a low chance of acceptance you might as well not sweat it.

I’m not usually one to yell “■■■■■” but honestly this makes no logical sense-- why would you be “made to apply ED”?

And if your parents are that involved, then clearly then know the stats and you know that those SATII, ACT and science AP score are not going to get you a spot.

This is bizarre.

If this is legit, you need to talk to your GC - just have him/her overlook the timely mailing of your letters and explain the situation.

If this is really true, and you honestly want to throw your chances, apply to only one school and make it SCS. That will guarantee the rejection.

By the way, CMU do offer scholarships and that’s very nice of them.

If you do get accepted, I know there are some loop holes in the early decisions process. I think one of them is if you can’t afford it. If anyone else knows more than I do, please elaborate. I am not too familiar with it, but I have heard people talk about it before.

Don’t parents have to sign the ED form, which includes an implied commitment to pay the EFC if feasible?

No way a student can borrow the EFC, so…

From the common app:

Early Decision (ED) is the application process in which students make a commitment to a first-choice institution where, if admitted, they definitely will enroll. While pursuing admission under an Early Decision plan, students may apply to other institutions, but may have only one Early Decision application pending at any time. Should a student who applies for financial aid not be offered an award that makes attendance possible, the student may decline the offer of admission and be released from the Early Decision commitment. The institution must notify the applicant of the decision within a reasonable and clearly stated period of time after the Early Decision deadline. Usually, a nonrefundable deposit must be made well in advance of May 1. The institution will respond to an application for financial aid at or near the time of an offer of admission. Institutions with Early Decision plans may restrict students from applying to other early plans. Institutions will clearly articulate their specific policies in their Early Decision agreement.

Really the only bad part about your profile is your SAT scores. Since you’re applying ED you actually have a good chance of getting in. That being said, if its unaffordable, you can usually contact the university and apply to other colleges.

How are your parents forcing CMU upon you if they aren’t going to pay?
