Applying for 11th grade way too late?

Right now I'm attending a Day-Private School as a 10th grader.
I really, really want to apply to a dorm-private school (I guess people just call it 'prep school' ?) and talked to my parents about it.

Will it be hard for me to get in, now that I'm applying for the 11th grade?
I know students usually apply for 9th grade,
and few apply for 10th grade.

But I haven't heard of anyone applying for 11th grade, or any schools accepting any for 11th grade.

A lot of schools still accept students for 11th, 12th and PG year.

blairt, if I'm not mistaken, got into Exeter as a new 11th grader.

It might be harder to get in, since there are less spots. But then again, only a few apply for that grade. There is this thread: "What is it about 11th grade admission?" or something like that started by blairt. You should read it. It says that Exeter's acceptance rate range from 17-22%. If you look at this number, it's not that far off from the regular acceptance rate. Also, contact the admission office. They might have the exact number.

Bottom line is, you still have to be really good and highly desirable-just like how you have to be to gain acceptance in 9th or 10th grade.

This last admissions cycle there were a number of applicants on this board applying for 11th grade and many were successful. I've heard that it is more competitive, but this varies by school by year. Acceptance for 12th grade is generally uncommon.

My son entered a MAPL school as an 11th grader (did a second junior year since he couldn't start as a senior). It was a great experience and he adjusted immediately. He had been at other boarding schools (don't ask....), but the final two years were worth all the pain of the early years.
There aren't many spots, but there are enough to make it worth applying. You have to hit the ground running with the whole college process, but you have first semester to settle in.

Yes, there were a few 11th grade appliers on this board last year who are now attending their respective schools. Msu (attending Milton Academy), Blairt (attending Phillips Exeter Academy) are two of them. Try sending them PMs.

It's tougher to get in and it appears tougher to adjust (preps get lots of advantages with adjusting, uppers are expected to know almost everything, even if they've only attended for a few days)..

But if you can get in, and you can adjust (have you ever moved before?), then it's fine.. I'm having a blast. Don't have time to post.

andover also takes new 11th graders and so does hotchkiss.

When my son was applying to prep/privates as a repeat 11th grader the folks at Andover told us that the admission percent was the same as an 11th grader as an incoming 9th graders, its just that much fewer apply

So if the admit rate as an incoming freshman at Andover is say, 20% they actually do take 20% of their applicants for 11th grade, but may only have 100 students apply

Anyway--that is what they told us--good luck

they take less students, but then again, less students apply. this year for milton academy (my current school.. im one of the new juniors olivia was talking about) accepted 12 new juniors (8 boys and 4 girls) out of about 80 or so applicants.

Msu, you should make a thread about how you're liking Milton. I'm thinking of applying there.

My son has a teammate who is a new 11th grader at his his school (NMH).

I got into a boarding school as an 11th grader... (though I'm a day student)

It's harder, but definitely possible.

I got into boarding school as a boarder as an incoming 11th grader, and I had a far from perfect record too.

Your main concern should be adjusting to boarding life once you get to your school!
