I am a 3.4 accounting major about to graduate in the Spring at a state-system university. I’ve had a summer banking internship and experience serving as the treasurer of a student organization; however, I have not had any formal accounting internship. How important is this when applying to a state/regional accounting firm, and would I be necessarily at a disadvantage for not having an accounting internship under my belt?
I’m not entirely an expert on this but here’s a hunch. I think, considering your GPA and experiences you’ll do quite fine. Although of course there are advantages that people with internship experiences would have. Are you still up to take internships?
Internships are pretty much your cannon ball to getting jobs. With the competitive industry you’re dealing with it’s probably a necessity to have one. It is a bloodshed for accounting positions out there. Is it too late to have an internship experience at this point in your career?
I believe if you took an internship, it will prepare you to the industry. There are things that are taught in the school, but there are also experiences in the internship that you can’t have in the school. I advice that you have an internship that focuses mainly on accounting, it’s not a waste of time, trust me.
