For the Seniors at our school, if they want to take AP English Lit and Comp, they must apply. Though I do see it as necessary, it's kind of lame to think that we've been at this school for three years and the English department doesn't know it's students well enough to say "Yes, you may take it" or "No, you may not"

What AP classes require application at your school? Is it necessary?

There are no recommendations, no prerequisites, or the like for getting into AP classes at my school. Heck, there was a girl with a 390 on her SAT math section in AP Calculus AB. I could have sworn we had illiterate folks in AP US History. Gotta love quantity over quality!

AP English requires an essay and recommendations, AP Bio requires some kind of application. Others just require certain grades in prerequisites.

Wow that's weird, at my school you can go into whatever class you want, they just say that if you go into a class you are not recommended for then you won't be able to switch out at all.

eh.. theres some sort of official protocol here but if you want to jump ahead you only need a recommendation (except for history APs and honors english [not ap] there are required projects)

It depends on the course for us:
History/English/Social Studies APs: Entrance exam, teacher recommendations, a in previous honors or b in previous AP course

Science APs: Prereqs (b+ in honors course of the same science, b+ in required math course), Teacher recommendation

Math APs: Well, we test into math tracks in fifth and sixth grade, which determines whether you have the chance to take math APs at all. Then if you test well in fifth/sixth grade you need an A in pre-calc for BC, B for AB, and a C for "regular" calc. For stat, you need a B in pre-calc and either b in calculus or concurrent enrollment in an AP calc. Then you still need teacher recommendation.

We don't have applications for any AP classes. We do have to have teachers sign our choices for next year in the fields they teach (e.g., last year when I signed up for AP Calc AB I had my Precalc teacher sign the sheet), but teachers will pretty much sign whatever you put in front of them. They might argue with you a little on your choices or give you an opinion, but they won't override you.

We do have to apply to the local community college if we want to take College English or College Calculus, though. (The teacher from the college comes here, but is affiliated with them.)

The AP English's at my school require that you take a multiple choice test and write an essay (stupid considering we've been doing that for 2 years..).

Some of the other AP classes have pre reqs but I've already done them all so I'm good to go.

At my school, you have to apply for AP European History (sucks for the professor: there are like 60 students taking HUSH last year, and all of them are qualified for AP Euro). For AP French and Spanish, you have to have an interview in that language with the AP teacher. As for the rest, you just need to be recommended for the class (but your parents can override you into said classes without permission).
