Applying for different semesters for different schools?

Hi,

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question. I'm an incoming sophomore applying to transfer to UT Austin (oos) for the spring 2014 semester. It's reachy for me, so I've decided to apply for spring and, in the likely event I don't get in, reapply for fall 2014. The thing is, I'm determined to transfer out of my current school no matter what so I'm planning to apply to other schools for fall 2014 as well (assuming I don't get into Texas.) The reason I'm not planning to apply to all the schools for spring is because my hs grades were terrible and I know that as a junior transfer your hs stats count less. Basically, my plan is apply to UT for spring, and if I don't get in, reapply to UT for fall along with other match/safety schools. However, while I'm filling out the ApplyTexas application for spring, can I also fill out the fall transfer applications for the other schools? I don't want to wait until November/December, when I find out if I got into UT, to start applying for fall. Are you allowed to apply for two different semesters at once, as long as the schools are different?

Sure. Other schools don’t know where else you’re applying, and even if they did it wouldn’t matter. The main negative is for you, as you will be spending the money to apply and may end up attending UT in the spring instead. How about filling out the applications early, but just not submitting until you get your decision from UT for spring? That way they’ll be ready to go if you don’t get in, but you won’t waste the money if you are accepted for spring.

But would submitting the apps in Nov/Dec hurt my chances at all? I know the deadlines for fall transfer are in the spring but if transfer admissions are anything like freshman admissions, isn’t it best to apply early?

If schools have hard deadlines, then it doesn’t matter when you submit your application as long as it’s before the deadline.

If schools have rolling admissions, then yes, earlier is better. However, there is the caveat that you need to balance when you apply and the ability to improve your application. For instance, will applying in the fall without your fall sem grades be better than applying in Dec with your fall sem grades? There’s no absolute answer to this type of comparison, it varies with the situation.
