I apologize for the delayed response, I think I was consumed by the holiday frenzy!!

With respect to safety at FIT, I would have to say there is nothing to worry about. It seems that the campus itself has a great security staff, and no one is allowed into the dorms (or any building) without their ID. They are very strict about it. Any guest to the dorms, no matter if they are there for 5 minutes or overnight, has to be signed in by the student and they have to submit a request for overnight guests in advance.

Once they are off campus and roaming around the city, the usual street smarts and precautions should kick in. My daughter was familiar with the city as well, having gone there for many years of ballet training, so her transition was an easy one with respect to city life. They will definitely explore all NY has to offer, as the campus is, well, small, lol. She is comfortable about taking the subway, but is aware of how and when to do so.

Like you, though, I worried about her safety. There is also the challenge of trying to find inexpensive things to do. Having said that, I will follow up by saying that she and her roommates have been creative in their search for fun. They have stayed overnight a couple of times on the sidewalks of Rock Center for SNL tickets, Jimmy Fallon tickets, and other shows. I was a nervous wreck thinking about it, but I’m happy to say, it has all turned out well, and what memories they have. They have met many stars and even had a conversation and pics with Nick Jonas who had a trailer right by FIT.

My daughter does live in the dorm and loves it. Her room is quite nice, they have a corner room on the 14th floor and her roommates are great. They met on FB when the students were posting their acceptances, and were able to request each other as roommates. My daughter stays on weekends, her roommates go home more often for various reasons, jobs, boyfriends, etc. They have a kitchen and do alot of cooking, which is helpful since the cafeteria food is not her favorite. They also have their own bathroom, and there is a washer/dryer a few steps from their room.

As far as school activities, she has participated in fashion week as a volunteer at a runway show, which was a great experience. She also belongs to the advertising club, where they take regular visits to nearby ad agencies to see what life in the real life is like and start to networking and making contacts. They also offer discount tickets to NYC events, shows, etc. You have to wait on a line and get there early, but if you don’t have class, hey, why not? SHe also has a job at the print shop on campus (works 10 hours/week), which is a great experience as she gets to see the wonderful work of upperclass students and faculty.

Good luck to your daughter, FIT was also my daughter’s number 1 choice and yes, it is a LONG wait till April 1st. What does your daughter want to study? Mine is a communication design major, originally intending to go on for graphic design, but is now leaning toward advertising design. I will be happy to answer any questions, you can send me a private message if you prefer.
