Applying for fall 2013?

Is anybody on here applying for the fall of 2013? I just wanted to talk to some other people about why they like the school!

My daughter goes to UMass!

She loves that she can walk to downtown, which was voted one of the best college towns in the country.

The food is awesome. It was ranked 3rd nationally for best food by the Princeton Review. Trust me, good food makes a difference when you are eating there 3+ times a day.

The selection of courses available with the 5 College Consortium pretty much guarantees if there is something you are interested in, there will be a course to take.

The option to design your own major. Right now she is considering majoring in something that combines biochemistry, politics and law. The fact that she gets to combine those studies into something meaningful when she graduates is very exciting.

The outstanding reputation of their travel abroad program.

The diversity of the campus. She has some friends that have gone to colleges in other parts of the country and they complain about the lack of diversity, the close-mindedness of the students, and the outright hostility to students from different cultures. Some universities can have a real cult-like feel to them, and if you don’t bleed the colors or follow the mindset you will have real trouble fitting in. College should be about expanding your horizons and experiencing new ideas, not joining 10,000 other students who all act/think/look the exact same way.

The D1 sports teams (I think they have 16 of them?) create a lot of school spirit.

I am. I think the campus is really nice and, as the previous poster said, I heard that their food is amazing, and so is their program of studies. Hopefully we’ll see each other there in the fall. :)

There are a lot of reasons to go to UMass, depending on what you’re interested in. I’ll just note the one thing I find the most interesting; something that usually goes under the radar.

I’ve taken classes at 5 colleges/universities including UMass, and with a college professor for a dad, have been around or visited countless others. One thing that strikes me about UMass is the shear amount of construction going up. Not so great for my class, but it’s the perfect time to get in if you’re just applying. Due to be completed by the fall of 2014 is a mammoth science research facility, along with a new honors housing complex. A new social science building was just started recently. They also have a couple of science buildings that were built in the past few years.

UMass has been jumping up a couple of spots in the news and world report rankings every year. I suspect more of that to come once the new facilities are finished. Now is a great time to be enrolling in UMass

Do you know when the new new honors housing complex will be done?

It is expected to be ready for the incoming class of 2017.
