Applying for fall of 2010 Cornell

@aussiegbrl those low SAT scores will probbaly kill u before they look at anythign else. SAts are important fro CAS. maybe try for a major in ILR?

Do the Bio requirements have to be sequence or does it really need a lab? I took a biology class with lab, but next sequence does not have lab. So I was wondering if I should take the next sequence or higher level class that is out of sequence but has a lab…?

hai rai-lee

aussiegbrl - there are tons of other CC applicants, i’m just saying that you automatically have a legit reason over anyone else’s fluff reason lol. i would definitely make your essay cornell-specific though. i also agree with looking into ILR.

luckeyg - you won’t get credit for that second science without a lab

as for the number of applicants, what did you expect? cornell’s a great school lol and they have a pretty generous finaid policy, which definitely attracts even more people.

ironic- the Cornell Academic Interest Essay, should it be more Cornell based (why you wanna go to Cornell and all) or should it be more in general about why you wanna major in whatever at Cornell?

chris0089 - I’ve been research the ILR school and it seems like a good place to go for me, especially since its curriculum covers many of the fields I am interested in and would want to work in. But, idk the majority of people who are in fact Poly Sci majors do go to CAS, so would I be in the wrong school? also, it seems like its more specialized to produce HR or management people - [Life After ILR](http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/admissions/careers/graduates.html)

madi - use the CA essay to talk about why you want to be at cornell. the AIE prompt itself is asking for your story. what did you do that made you want to pursue your major? and after you tell that story, link it back to the college’s mission and show how it’s the only place for you to do so. the story part is very important, though, so i’d really focus on making most of your essay about that

aussiegbrl - we’re suggesting ILR over CAS because you won’t need to submit your SATs and in general ILR has a higher acceptance rate. what are your career goals? if it’s law school, then you should know that tons of ILRies are pre-law. a lot of ILR kids go into union or labor law. ILR is more interdisciplinary than the gov (there’s no poli sci) major in CAS. it’s ultimately up to you, but i would review the graduation requirements of both colleges to decide for sure

ironicallyunsure - good point, and I will review grad. requirements during the day since I am rather irrational and groggy this early in the morning.

Thanks to Ironic’s suggestion, I made my whole CA essay WHY CORNELL (already fixed with specific reasons, thanks Ironic :P) and my supplemental essay about my story and how I have developed my interest with only 3 or 4 sentences to link back to Cornell.

hey guys quick question, I sent all my forms like my recs and official report, but I sent themn to the adress that I found on collegeboard. When I looked at the faq’s though on the applicant ID page, they said to maild it to another adress. Do you think that they will receive it anyway? Thanks.

@transfer - best bet would be to call admissions office asap and let them know what address you sent them too. That way, they could tell you whether or not you need to regather the materials again and send them by the 15th.

Fall 2010 Transfer

New York University
Sophomore Transfer
GPA: 3.867
SAT: 650CR 690M 750W (2090 Total)
Greats Recs
Great Essays

Mediocre High School Record (2 C’s in Calc and Physics Senior Year)
Applying to CAS Undecided
Potential Crew Recruit

Whadda ya think people?

^well since we attend the same school, and your GPA blows mine out of the water, I say you have a good shot. CAS is tough, but you seem competitive. Idk about undecided though, unless you explained that good in ur essay, try to pick a major?

applying undecided is tricky. how are you going to explain your passion for your major without one? i only know of 2 transfers who ever got in undecided, and both were to CALS. and what’s this potential crew recruit? i’m fairly certain they don’t recruit athletes as transfers.

Yea ironicallyunsure, I just put down the crew recruit for the hell of it. I was pretty certain they don’t recruit. Anyways, I’m applying as a sophomore so I thought I could get away with being undecided. I mentioned something about how cornell is extremely unique in that its curriculum spans such a WIDE range and that I could only find myself (and my major) at Cornell.

Castiel, why do you want to transfer? I’m curious.

Glad to see this topic stays so active ;D Sorry for anyone I haven’t responded to by email yet, I’ve been bombarded and I’m see-sawing on dropping my Genetics course (Me: “oh im in genetics” everyone i ever talk to: “what!?!?! you’re COMM why are you-” Me: “BIO MINOR DAMNIT”)

…lol, but it’s been really difficult for my first semester, so I’ll probably drop it (and you don’t even get a W, yay) and just take Evolution and other classes to fulfill my minor next semester.

So yeah, any applicants and future apps who sent emails to me that didn’t get responses, expect them to arrive over the next week.

Might I also suggest (you can wait till you guys start getting accepted) making a Cornell Fall '10 Transfer group on Facebook? That’s how most of our amazing spring group met/got to know each other, and it worked out great for when we arrived here. Everyone somewhat knew things about each other and had in their head who they were gonna be friends with and scwhat not. Just a thought.

I will forever associate myself with the Spring group, no matter what happens.

@clout: well NYU is very rigorous, but I find that it does not meet my needs. I got really annoyed when I was capped at 18 credits for one semester and I wanted to do 30. My advisor looked at me like I was crazy and said no, I couldn’t. I really don’t like it when your academic advisor discourages you for being ambitious, and I knew that at Cornell there was a guy that graduated with 8 majors, and im sure he had no cap on credits.

Plus I applied early decision to Cornell it is my dream school. As soon as I got into NYU I knew I wanted to transfer out before I even got here. I like NYU, but love Cornell and everything about it.

I have a million other reasons, but that would fill up like 2 pages on this thread haha.

what about you?

Woah. 8 Majors seem intense. How would you fit 30 credits into a single semester? 30 credit hours? The exams would kill.

The results will be released in a month and a half. URGGGGGH

castiel - i would never, ever take more than 15 credits here. i’m taking 13 credits of class and 2 of research and it’s already tons to deal with. plus they don’t advise transfers to take more than 14 their first semester

rileyyyyyyyy you’re ours, don’t worry. springies fo lyf3

hahah yeah that kid is my inspriation.

30 credits wouldn’t be too bad, a lot of work, but thats what I like. I love to challenge myself. In high school, in my senior year I took 8 AP classes straight and skipped AP Calc Ab and went straight to BC then worked my way backwards. It was hard and I didn’t get straight A’s but the challenge was fun.
