Applying for Financial Aid With Unusual Family Situation

So I have a sort of complicated situation: my mother is an immigrant and doesn’t file taxes and doesn’t have a tax ID, my father lives in my home country of Estonia, and my brother claims me as a dependent on his tax returns. I am also an undocumented DACA student. Not sure how to fill out financial aid forms.

I can’t say for sure either. But you should know that tax dependent is not related to who should fill financial forms. It is legal guardian which sounds like your mother.

edit: you already have a thread going on this, please refer to the answers there

Who is supporting your mom and you? Does your dad send you and your mom money?

Are your parents divorced?

Easiest way to get this answered…contact your colleges.

As noted on the other thread…your mom is likely your parent…not your sister.

If your sister has LEGAL guardianship, you would be independent for financial aid purposes, and would use neither parent,

You need to find out the status of your guardianship. Is this a court appointed guardianship…or are you simply residing with your sister.

Closing thread since there is another one on the same topic.
