I've always been outstanding with words - numbers, not so much.

I'm looking to apply for history master's degree programs, and as my GPA isn't great I was hoping to rely on recommendations/GREs to get me through the door.

I took the GRE this morning, scored 800 verbal/540 quant.

Realizing that I totally pwned the verbal reasoning section, will the mediocre/low quant score hurt me any, given that I'm not applying for STEM-type degree programs?

Thanks!

First off, congrats on the perfect verbal score… that is beyond!

My understanding, as someone in a masters program (anthropology) currently, talking to other masters students… getting into grad school is not a science, nor does it have a formula

With GPA, how great is “isn’t great” - gpa does matter, especially gpa in major. So if your history GPA matters more than how you did in any required science or math classes.

LOR do matter a lot. I say look for a good mix of professors who know you, write well and have some importance in the academic world (though knowing you and good writting matters more that clout).

Lastly, for history (as well as other humanities/social sciences) the writing sample matters a lot. Send something that is top notch, matches your interests and uniquely fits in your field (if you have a BA thesis, I recommend that, otherwise something you wrote as a senior)

All that said, your GREs (as long as the writing is probably 5 or higher) are more than fine. I say you should apply to a broad range of masters programs, that way at least one program will like what they see (and with luck more than one).

Wow. I can get 800 in quant almost every time I take it but 800 in verbal, is next to impossible. Congrats. Since quant skills are not that related to History major, you will be fine. But try to cover your behind with great LORs and a well writte SOP.
