See title........

No, it’s not a waste.

maybe not a “complete” waste.

I think that depends on your school and the career center. I know my undergrad school had a pretty active career center, but still only about half of students actually found their final job through job fairs at the school or the career center.

Absolutely not a waste! That was how DS got an internship in his field the last two summers.

Does anyone successfully have an interview by applying through indeed, monster etc.? I have 3.8 overall and 4.0 major GPA, been applying for more than 100 internships online and NO ONE ever gets back to me at all. I am from a state university, tier 3. Is that the reason why they never look at my resume?

Are you applying to nearby employers or ones from far away? Also, are you sure your resume is any good? You might want to bring it by your school’s career center and have them take a look at it.

I applied both in my states and nearby states. I think my resume is good, it was reviewed by many people and I was invited to interview by 6 accounting firms (2 of which are big4s) during the last on campus recruiting season. I ended up with 2 offers. I am just so curious that is there anyone looking at my resume at all?

It might just be since it’s near the end of the year. I’ve heard hiring stuff and whatnot slows down around this part of the year, so maybe it’ll pick up next month. =/

I think some companies online might also just leave ads up forever, just so if anyone leaves they’ll already have some leads for a replacement. Companies coming to your career fair do so at significantly more expense, so they might only do it when they have a position in mind.

Are you changing your coverletter to uniquely apply to all of the places you’re applying? Have you followed up with emails and phonecalls?

Also that’s not unheard of. For last summer I sent out 95 applications, got five interviews and three offers.

I had a question for you guys… I applied online to several companies including Investment banks last month. However, I am now transferring to a more reputed university ( Michigan ) and was wondering if it would be possible to highlight that to the HR dept of these companies since my previous university was an average private university compared to Michigan… Since Michigan is a target school, would it make much of a difference and if so, how do I go about doing it?

My recommendation would be to resend your resume through the same online postings that you’ve already submitted. Presumably your updated resume shows the beginning date of your attendance at the new school and last date of attendance at the first school. You might add a brief explanation: Transferred to more competitive business program on strength of transcript.

Son applied for an internship online last spring - 3.9 GPA at a third-tier and got his research internship. There are lots of research internships that you apply online for - it’s just a matter of finding them. I had a look around yesterday (I think that it’s still early) and found one that would be perfect for this summer and told my son about it. We’ll look for a few more in the coming months and hopefully he’ll score one for this summer too. These internships are in STEM areas.

AUTransfer: Wow, that number is impressive. Can you please share what websites you usually look at? I apply through monster and indeed mostly, and some other websites I went over when I google some key words.

I am accounting major, and I thought it should be easy to find a job since I saw many ads out there looking for accountants. I am wrong! I think there are too many accounting students looking for jobs right now, I heard recruiters receive 600 resumes weekly.

@BCEagle91:

Where have you been looking? I have been looking for research and internship opportunities for the summer and I am having a hard time finding any. Any help you could offer would be appreciated.

I’ve just been using google. The search format I’ve used is

REU 2010 <major></major>

I’ve found REUs for my son to consider and for the sons of a few people in the office with different majors. One of them is a materials science (or something like that) major at Cornell and I found a materials science REU for him at his own school and another similar one at Dartmouth - both don’t have the requirement that students have to be juniors which many REUs have.

I found a corporate internship for our son to look at on indeed.com. Search terms were the location, major and the word “intern”. He usually gets company internship announcements in his university email account during the spring semester so there may be opportunities in the next few months. The thing is to keep plugged into the university career center, look at the job sites and figure out the keywords to use, look at the REUs and use your network.

I noticed that you asked about Northrup and did a quick search on them and found quite a few internships around the country but they’re looking for mostly EE, ME, Business and CS majors. I didn’t see anything under Chem E.

While many REUs say they only allow Juniors I knew a number of people that got them sophomore year.

This is all with ten minutes on google. It seems to me that there’s a lot more out there this year in STEM compared to last year. Maybe there was a lot more money out there for STEM research due to the stimulus package passed in 2009.

You are somewhat at a disadvantage as a Freshman (I think that I saw you mention that elsewhere) but it can’t hurt to do a few applications. You can always email the coordinator to ask what they think your chances are before applying.

Christine, you ought to look beyond Monster at sites that target CPAs. Start with your state’s Society of CPAs website, also TaxTalent, Indeed, WebCPA, the Big 4’s websites, MonsterTrak, and Simply Hired. Your state may also have an internship database website; I know ours does. Let us know how it turns out.
