Im looking at going back to grad school for a MS in Petroleum engineering. Im currently an EE and have been working for 7 years now. Although I havent taken the GREs yet, I know my GPA and no PetE background is going to hold me back a bit. That being said, I was thinking about applying to schools for this coming spring semester but I read that applying for spring admittance is not a good idea. First I read that since they accept most students in the fall, there is very limited number of spots that they can fill in the spring. Also, I would be out of sync with the classes of other students that are in the program.

So should I even attempt at applying or should I just wait for the fall? I guess another 6 months is not that much of a wait, but Im anxious to start something new.

I don’t see any reason why not. I mean essentially you will study the same material regardless when you enter the program, right?

The one downside is probably organizations. In the Fall there are more new students and so it is easier to approach different student organizations in schools. Other than that, I don’t see any potential downside for spring admission.

Similarly, many schools offers both spring and fall transfer admission.
I’d say save a semester if you can. It’s always good to graduate earlier and not wait until the mass graduate in the summer and the job pool becomes difficult.

Not all courses are offered both semesters and if there are fall courses that are prerequisites to spring courses, then you’ll be in a tough situation.

I just remember reading on one admissions website that if they normally take say 50-60 students in the fall, they only have openings for less then 10 in the spring, but i’m not sure that holds true for all schools. Has anyone been admitted to grad school starting in the spring semester?
