Applying for scholarships after graduating from high school

I already graduated from high school, so I would no longer be considered a senior. I want to apply for scholarships over the summer, but there are different categories such as some for high school and some for college. What would I classify as? I suppose I should go for the college scholarships, even though I'm technically not in college yet?

When will you attending colleges?

@4kidsdad‌ - This upcoming Fall, 2014. Basically in 3 months.

If there are ny scholarships that have an application deadline that hasn’t passes, and that will be awarded prior to the end of summer…apply. I will say, you are very late to,the game for doing this. And truthfully, the BEST scholarship awards are given by the colleges themselves.

Why did you wait so long to consider applying for scholarships?

Are you looking for merit-based or need-based scholarships/grants? I think you’re too late for most of them; however, you may get Pell grants if you qualify.

OP…where did you finally decide to matriculate? It sort of looks like Berkeley from your posts. If so, you are OOS for that school. You had started another thread previously requesting info about finances, and at one point actually said the CA schools were unaffordable, and your state school safety might need to be your choice.

Did something change? Or did you choose Cal, knowing that you would at least be responsible for the $23,000 differential between in and out of state costs?

Or are you talking about a different college?

Regardless…how much do you need to attend?

Re: the Pell, one would hope, that a student needing financial, aid would have completed their FAFSA in time to make a matriculation decision…and would already know if they received a Pell.

When we searched scholarships for my daughter, there were only a couple that have deadline in early July. Technically, you are still applying as high school senior. You are indeed very late if you just started looking for scholarships. Most of the scholarships my D applied have already announced the results in the last couple months. There are some from college to be announced like some school sponsored NMSC ones. Otherwise, they should be mostly announced as it may be important for the enrollment decision.

Plus almost anything you would be applying for NOW would likely be a one time, smaller amount. Not renewable.

at one pt you were going to accept UGa with free tuition. You didnt get great aid from the UCs. are you now trying to get money for that?

The above was posted by the OP on May 1. Makes it sound like Cal is the choice. But of course I could be wrong.

To the OP…in your other thread, it very much sounded like your family could NOT pay the $23,000 differential between in and out of state costs.

<<<
So I’ve been admitted to UCB and UCLA from OOS (Georgia), and I’ve been charged a lot. Despite the aid that I’ve been given, the UCs expects me to pay ~$40,000/year. Now, about my financial situation, we’re not rich - income of $50,000-70,000. So as the situation is right now, chances of me going to one of these fantastic schools looks unlikely.
<<<

what is going on? at one point you were going to go to UAH for practically free. Your parents must have assets if your efc is about $17k (17 + 23 = 40).

what are your parents saying about paying? If you are thinking about getting big loans, that is NOT a wise idea. You will not get paid more for graduating from Cal…not at all.

And it’s highly unlikely you will garner any significant scholarship money to offset costs at this very late date.

To the OP…are your parents now able to pay for CAl…or are you still anticipating taking loans to fund your education there? What are your parents saying about paying the bills?

Scholarships for $500 or $1000 here and there can be a nice plus but it isn’t going to help you afford an unaffordable college.

Funny thing… OP has not answered any of the followup questions asked!

It is not funny. At least that is what OP found from this thread.

@billcsho‌
It’s not funny, but going into debt for Cal instead of accepting UAH’s full ride (tuition + room and board) is a terrible idea.

It depends on the amount of debt. But for Berkeley, the amount is likely hard to swallow.

Well…the student claims to have a $17k EFC. Add that to the $23,000 differential between in and out of state costs. So the very least this school is costing this student is $40,000 a year. And that is assuming the parents can pay the rest of the cost of attendance, plus little things like transportation from the home state to CA.

In previous threads, this poster said the family could not pay these costs.

So OP…what has changed? How much money in scholarships are you hoping to find…at this late date.
