I'm applying for the UCLA Honors Program and it says I have to verify by sending them my rank and I have to be in the top 3% of my class. My rank puts me at 3.7% of my class (I go to an IB school so there's a lot of us up there). Does this make me in-eligible?

You should have gotten an invitation to apply. If that's the case, all you have to do is write an essay, and you'll get in.

If you're applying based on no invitation, I really don't know what the protocol is.

For the record, if you end up getting into the honors program ACCEPT IT. I was really confused as to what this was when I got accepted. I'll try and break it down:

Honors doesn't really have any additional prestige, or the weight that the name "honors" has in high school (departmental honors is a different story, however). Really, the only DIRECT correlation is that you get priority enrollment for classes, for at least three quarters. Priority enrollment means that you get to enroll for your first set of classes before anyone else, which is extremely helpful, especially as a freshman. I haven't done any honors classes, and don't plan to, which means I'll be dropped after spring quarter. But, I got three FREE quarters of priority enrollment.

If you get something more out of it, great. But understand that there is NO DOWNSIDE whatsoever to enrolling. You don't have to take the classes if you don't want to, and you can just milk it for the priority enrollment until your class standing is higher and you can enroll sooner.

There are two ways you may qualify for the College Honors Program - by GPA and Test Scores OR by Class Rank:

Your GPA and Test Scores (as reported on your UC application):

* You must have at least a 4.1 GPA (*weighted, capped)
AND
an SAT score of at least 2080 or an ACT score of at least 31

Your Class Rank:
* You must rank within the top 3% of your graduating class. We will require that you mail to us an official verification of your rank.

It is important that you meet one of the two requirements above.

their are two ways to qualify. note that Honors is only for L&S - no engineering, art, architecture, or film.

Last year my SAT was ten points short. I tried to petition, they said no. You need to make their exact specifics or wait a quarter.

(This was all before I SIR'd Cal)

So if I'm in Engineering should I just not bother applying?

i qualify for both requirements, but i didn't get an invitation. any idea what to do? i really want to get that headstart on enrollment. i'm in for nursing, i'm pretty sure that falls under letters of science.

if you're in engineering you CAN'T apply.

it's the college honors program. as in, college of letters and science. which you aren't in ;)

and wilbeezy, just apply, you don't need an invitation to apply. not sure how nursing works, but if it's letters and science, then you qualify.

nursing is in a separate school...i just didn't put it down since i didn't think there was anything undergrad in nursing >.>

in short, wilbeezy, no you can't apply.

Well I was accepted into the College of Letters and Science so that's why I'm asking. I meet the GPA requirement but my ACT is 1 point under. I think I'm going to try applying anyways via the rank thing, I just hope 3.7% qualifies as Top 3% >_<

I just checked and my rank is 17/534 which puts me at 3.1% =(

How does one actually apply? Is an application included with the acceptance package that presumedly comes in the mail?

If I took the ACT after the deadline for sending it to the UCs, can I use that score to get into the Honors College, or no? I sent in my SAT with a 2050 because I didn't get an ACT fee waiver until after the deadline for the UCs.

i have a question, what if my school does not rank its students?
Does that make me inelgible for honors?
And also, do you have to be accepted with honors? or can you apply after being accepted as a regular student?

Sorry I can't answer your questions but there's an application page under your my.ucla.edu (if you are in the College of Letters and Science)

Darn, I just saw the "as reported on your UC app" part.

engineering will keep you on your toes... dont need the honors component.....................

You can also wait until your first quarter is finished, then apply to the Honors program. They go by your GPA, so if you have a strong GPA your first quarter, you should have no problem applying and getting accepted.

for anyone not knowing how to apply ------> website!

nearly everything you do at UCLA as far as administrative things will be online ;)

What's the honor's program? Are Regent scholars not invited?

search, the honors program has been answered all over the recent threads

congrats on regents, yes regents are invited, yes regents should be able to use a search function...
