Applying for the second time, so how does it work?

That is crazy, asking your parents to spend their hard earned savings that they need for retirement when you could find some schools that might give you merit scholarships if you have high stats.

I’m sorry @thepatzae

Your financial plan for college is to have your parents give you every nickel they have? Really?

My opinion…you need to look for a much less expensive option than NYU. There is NOTHING magical about spending $70,000 a year for a degree from NYU…nothing. Plenty of colleges here that would cost you about half of that at full pay.

And I’m quite positive there are colleges in your country that would be far less expensive.

Here…read the links in THIS thread for lower cost universities in the United States.

ok, i totally have to consider that again. think you all for your help, it definitely opened my eyes.

OP- I’m going to save you several months of aggravation.

You are not going to NYU. There is not a single scenario which gets you there- and not a single scholarship for international students which will cover as much of the costs as you need. You will not be approved for a student visa on the basis of scholarships which you may or may not get, or assistance which you may or may not qualify for. No visa. And you are not needy enough (ironic) to get the kind of aid from NYU that you need.

You can spend several months contacting this woman, applying for aid, filling out forms and writing essays- and you are STILL not going to go to NYU.

So- moving along- identify a back up plan which is not NYU. Every minute you spend worrying about a college which you will not be attending is a minute you are not spending working on your back up plan. So do that.

I’m sure you are a great kid- and I hate to burst your bubble- but there is no financial aid fairy. And because you are overseas, you are not going to be allowed to show up in the US to start Freshman year and then try to figure out the finances going forward (as you would if you were moving from Texas to NY). Hug to you.

for me it is kind of hard to explain. i told my parents how much everything will cost us, and they have totally agreed, but they wanted me to find some financial help because they just do not want to spend that much money for my education. the problem is that last year, the total cost of attendance to NYU was something around 860 000 of my currency. this year, it is 1 120 000 and that is the main problem that has occured. it is not also like my parents have only 280k dollars on their account. they are sooo willing to spend their money on my education, but they do not want to spend everything. + they have many sources of money in investments such as houses, apartments, so they are totally conscious how much NYU costs and they want me to go there, but they would love me to get some financial help because that is just insane to spend 70k dollars per year in NYU. they said it would be OK if I could spend 50k per year. even if they still would have to spend 70k, they could do it, but this is just insane. they want me to go to NYU but they also want me to find a way to not pay that much, because for a person from my country, where 1 dollar is 4 of my money, this is just too much.

so only people who do not have that much money at all can apply for financial aid? that might seem as a stupid question, but maybe I just need this answer

@blossom ok, that is very honest and helpful. i really needed somebody to explain me that this way

What sold your parents on a NYU or bust opinion? Like I said upstream…it’s one of the most costly schools here. $70,000 a year, out of pocket, is a ridiculous amount to spend on an undergrad degree at NYU.

There are TONS of other more affordable options.

What are your stats? You say you were rejected from NYU last year…so what’s the deal? What has changed? Did you not apply elsewhere last year? What have you been doing this year that would make you a more appealing candidate to any college?

What is available in your home country?

OP- anyone can apply for financial aid. What we are trying to tell you is that you are not going to get enough to afford NYU.

You do not qualify for various funding programs that are available for US citizens (Federal loans and grants). You cannot commute from home to cut down on costs. And in order to get a visa you need to demonstrate that you have every nickel you will need for all four years.

You bring up the currency fluctuation which is an excellent point. There are no guarantees that next year, the tuition won’t be even higher due the strength of the dollar. Then what?

Find a cheaper option. You cannot afford NYU and your parents don’t understand how the US educational system operates if they continue to encourage you to just apply for a couple of scholarships to make NYU work.

What are your stats? What do you want to study?

Your posts are confusing. Is your problem that your parents can’t pay $70k/year or they just don’t want to? There are a lot of students in the US who have dream schools their parents won’t pay for, but colleges only take available sources of income into account, not parents reluctance to part with them. So if the parents won’t pay, the kids go elsewhere.

If your parents’ money is invested in “houses and apartments,” why should US organizations give you need based aid to attend NYU? Shouldn’t your parents consider liquidating some of their assets first? If they’re reluctant to do that, maybe they should consider sending you to a less expensive school.

Only an incredibly small number of American students can afford NYU even with financial aid. Don’t confuse the point that it is expensive for the idea that the education is head and shoulders better.

It is a bad idea for your parents to spend that money for NYU. It is probably a bad idea for them to spend even half that amount of money.

The advice we give to all kids is to find something that fits what you need AND you can afford. We tell American kids all the time that they are better off spending less. You can search the threads–eg “is VT worth an extra $20k per year” etc.

If you can provide more information someone here may be able to assist you.

You apparently do not know this, but NYU financial aid is an oxymoron, and students and their parents from NYU with heavy debt can have their lives ruined for the fantasy of an NYU education due to the heavy burden that delays or makes almost impossible retirement, saving for a house, getting married, having children.

What is your intended major? What are your career plans? What country will you work in?
