Applying for transfer admission to a college you got into during high school

I’m about to start university this fall, but the decision about where to attend was close between two schools. If, for some reason, I do not like the university I chose to attend this fall, and try to transfer to the other school I was thinking about, will I have an advantage given that I was previously accepted to this university as a high school student?

If this question is confusing, let me know. I can clarify.

Thanks

The answer to your question is: it depends. For some colleges, transfer admissions are more challenging than freshman admissions.

The better strategy is to assume you will absolutely love the school, and that the question is moot. What’s the point of having a defeatist attitude before you’ve even stepped onto the campus?

Agree that “it depends” upon several factors including, but not limited to, your college grades earned during your first semester.

If the other school is an ivy level school you would likely need to have a valid academic reason for transferring.

It is harder to be admitted as a transfer student than as a freshman. If you are already thinking of pulling a step out, it is also hard to commit yourself to non academic activities, make friends and enjoy the experience. You are in a good school with plenty of opportunities go in with a open mind, you will do well. The transition is tougher as a transfer student. You would also need a very specific reason as to why you are seeking to transfer, “not liking” is never a good reason.

In the past you have indicated that Olin college of Engineering as the other option you were considering, Olin doesn’t have an official transfer policy and you will have to apply as a freshman to gain admission. They don’t transfer credits for the classes you have completed at your current university, which will mean that you will be starting as a freshman.

At GT, you will need a GPA 3.5 or above in the required classes and they have transfer acceptance rate of around 35%
Usually the transfer students have about 60+ credits before they transfer. You would have also lost a lot of benefits you were offered such as Honors college. @kjake2000
