Applying from College

Hey there, I'm actually looking into the Naval Academy and that is why you will see BGO throughout this post, but I haven't received many responses in the Annapolis forum so I figured I would try my luck here. Hopefully I get some more replies =O. Well, on to my post.

I'm trying to get into the Academy from college and I've talked with my BGO but he doesn't give me much detail when it comes to the information, so I was hoping someone with some experience could clarify things for me.

I was mainly wondering, what kind of grades, SAT scores, and extracurriculars did you have to receive an appointment from college?

My GPA is a bit low at the moment at 3.3, but by the time I'm ready to apply it should be in the 3.7-3.85 range. My BGO has told me that I need to "ACE" the SAT and completely "WOW" them. But "ACE" and "WOW" could mean anything like 2100/2400 or 2400/2400 so I was a bit curious as to what others had on their applications.

He also suggested that I apply every year even though I am pretty sure I would not be found academically qualified for atleast another year or two. If things go according to plan I would like to attend the USNA in Summer of 2010, so would start my application process in late 2008/early 2009. I could attend Summer of 2009 also but that would be a stretch in my mind.

I have no problem with the nominations as I have the Presidential nom. due to my dad's service. Sports wise I won't have an issue either, though my BGO didn't mention what looked good on my application when it came to leadership qualities. Just that I needed to do well with my English, Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics courses.

I'm slightly curious if he just forgot to mention it in the emails/phone conversations or if it isn't that big of a thing for college applicants?

Any information regarding this process is welcome, and thanks in advance. =]

CJohnson2013--
Hey! I got into WP from college! haha
I'm a bit confused by your post--are you in college now? Or plan to be? But then that doesn't explain your mention of GPA... I was in college for a yr, so I'm not sure how helpful this is...
Anyway, here are my stats:

I don't know how much you know about the app process, but most of it concerns HS work grades 10-12 (to be fair for all applicants)
But, they also want to see that you're not sloughing off at State U ie working, getting a good GPA, clubs/activities, and staying fit

Also, when you do apply (before age 23) stress why you have spent yrs striving to reach the ultimate goal of the academy. Explain how you have stuck to it and matured over the process.
I explained that I wasn't ready after HS graduation and I have matured and seen that I am up for the challenges, career, etc that the military (or Navy) has to offer.

Another note: get to know your instructors for Eng, Chem/Phys, and Math so they can be good recs :) This will also help your GPA issue!

Oh, and don't wait until late in any yr to begin applying. You can start in the summer and do the CFA, send out recs, fill out the resume type stuff. That leaves time for re-do's, lost files, interviews, and the sooner you finish, the sooner (usually) you find out and can plan on the following yr. (Hopefully to be spent at Annapolis!!)
****OMG make copies of everything you send! Pretty much everything will be on-line, so I'm not sure how that will work out, but record/copy everything possible!!!

Hope this helps!

p.s. Hey...Wait a minute, is this treason? Go Army, Beat Navy :)

You're talkin bout a low GPA, my college GPA was soooo low I dare not post it publicly. For the SATs for all the SA's, I'd say that passing is 600 each section but to wow you need 700 somethings.

Your GPA isn't that bad, trust me. You can still try from that.

As per leadership, just do things you love, like be a captain of your sport, start some clubs with some initiative, or community service. The usual suspects.

Ah TYVM you two. These posts are exactly what I was looking for and in such short time too =O.

I think the Navy board just got upstaged but you didn't hear that from me... ;p

Sorry if it's a bit confusing, I'm in college now but I was going to get my AA degree before I started applying, so my GPA would go up considerably by that time. But I guess I will just start with the pre-app now.

@BlknightMulan- That is a bit reassuring lol, maybe I'll start a paintball team and "captain" that XD. Thanks for the info, was wondering what "WOW" meant.

As for Go Army, Beat Navy...we're all the same team until I'm actually in =P

Not sure about USNA, but for USMA they look for As and Bs in college. If you did take the core courses needed for WP in high school (or did not do well in them) - make sure you take those subjects in college (and do well in them). SAT's should be in the mid 600s if possible (the higher the better - above 700 would be great).
