Applying from College

Hey there, I’m actually looking into the Naval Academy and that is why you will see BGO (ALO for those of you going to USAFA I believe) throughout this post, but I haven’t received many responses in the Annapolis forum so I figured I would try my luck here. Hopefully I get some more replies =O. Well, on to my post.

I’m trying to get into the Academy from college and I’ve talked with my BGO but he doesn’t give me much detail when it comes to the information, so I was hoping someone with some experience could clarify things for me.

I was mainly wondering, what kind of grades, SAT scores, and extracurriculars did you have to receive an appointment from college?

My GPA is a bit low at the moment at 3.3, but by the time I’m ready to apply it should be in the 3.7-3.85 range. My BGO has told me that I need to “ACE” the SAT and completely “WOW” them. But “ACE” and “WOW” could mean anything like 2100/2400 or 2400/2400 so I was a bit curious as to what others had on their applications.

He also suggested that I apply every year even though I am pretty sure I would not be found academically qualified for atleast another year or two. If things go according to plan I would like to attend the USNA in Summer of 2010, so would start my application process in late 2008/early 2009. I could attend Summer of 2009 also but that would be a stretch in my mind.

I have no problem with the nominations as I have the Presidential nom. due to my dad’s service. Sports wise I won’t have an issue either, though my BGO didn’t mention what looked good on my application when it came to leadership qualities. Just that I needed to do well with my English, Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics courses.

I’m slightly curious if he just forgot to mention it in the emails/phone conversations or if it isn’t that big of a thing for college applicants?

Any information regarding this process is welcome, and thanks in advance. =]

I'm not exactly sure what kind of SAT/ACT scores they're looking for, but they will focus in on your college grades. If they decide that you're a good candidate overall but may be just slightly lacking academically, you could recieve an appointment to NAPS instead (USNA Prep School), which would prepare you very well for USNA itself; hence, in my opinion, it's worth applying each year.

Just focus on getting strong grades in the courses you mentioned, because those will most likely have a strong influence on USNA's decision. Best of luck to you.

Don't delay your application just because you think you are not qualified, apply and see what happens. Anything on the SAT over 2000 would probably be pretty good, but if you have a low gpa you would need a higher SAT score to maybe offset that.

Here's some info straight from the USAFA site:

Thanks guys (or gals can't tell =x) for the info, I think I'll have to set my SAT goals to above 700, 2200+ here I come. Army and Air Force are kicking the Navy's ass when it comes to replying haha. And from what I've heard now, figure it's time to start that application process =o.

Thanks again!

Good luck!

That's funny...I would always get immediate feedback from Annapolis whenever I sent something in, and wouldn't hear anything from USAFA. As it turned out I got rejected by Navy and accepted here.
