Applying in the fall to transfer

Cal Poly Slo is one of my top choices for school, but I am conflicted as to which major I should apply under. I’m very interested in psychology and child development, which are both offered at this school. However, the CD major has about three to four major prep classes that are not offered at CC’s in my area, while the Psych major prepwork would require me to take three classes in the fall to be completed, all of which I can do. I received a high B in psych 101 my freshmen year, and an A this semester in child development. I have a GPA of about 3.45, and have not taken the SATs or the ACTS since they are not required of me to transfer at this point in time. I would like to apply as a psych major, but am not sure if my gpa is good enough to make the cut. I have tried to figure out just how impacted the psychology department is at SLO, but I haven’t found anything yet. If anybody knows more stats on the psych major at SLO such as the average gpa or number of students they accept on average, that would be great. Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks!!

Make sure you have the golden four completed (this is a MUST for a transfer) and that you will have most of your gen. ed and whatever major classes you need in progress or completed by next spring. (check out assist.org - completely helpful). I don’t see why you wouldn’t have a chance to get into SLO. I do think psychology is impacted, but it is important to go the school that has the major you want. Always worth a try! good luck!

You probably know this already, but Psychology falls under the College of Liberal Arts, so you can go by those statistics to determine your chances. According to the 2013 student profile, out of the 2,121 applicants for the College of Liberal Arts, 636 were selected, which is a yield of about 30%. The average GPA was 3.35. If you keep your GPA in its current state or higher, I think you have a solid chance.

I couldn’t find anything specifically for the Psychology department, but I hope this helps you a bit.
