Applying late :(

So basically I’m applying late to everything because I realized my top school (admitted into) isn’t my top school anymore. I plan to major in journalism and have a very strong writing background (published, heavily involved with organizations, etc). My scores are not good though. I have a 23 ACT and 3.5 GPA. Could I get into a school like Sewanee? Where do you suggest I apply for good journalism schools? Note: I am already admitted to Mizzou.

Doesn’t Mizzou have just about the oldest and one of the best journalism schools in the country?

It still may not be the school for everyone.

Check out Ohio University’s Scripts School of Journalism.

This is based on a poll of working journalists:

"1) University of Georgia, Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications
2) University of California, Berkley Graduate School of Journalism
3) University of Missouri, Missouri School of Journalism
4) Syracuse University, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications
5) St. Bonaventure, The Russell J. Jandoli School of Journalism and Mass Communication
6) Columbia University, Graduate School of Journalism
7) Northwestern University, Medill
8)UNC-Chapel Hill, School of Journalism and Mass Communication
9) Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University
10) The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism

So there’s the top 10 for you, based on your votes. In addition to the top vote-getters, I have to name the following schools as honorable mentions, since they all received votes in my poll:

Arizona State University, The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication
University of Florida, College of Journalism and Communications
University of Maryland, Philip Merrill College of Journalism
Ohio University, E.W. Scripps School of Journalism
University of Oklahoma, Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communications
University of Wisconsin, School of Journalism & Mass Communication
George Washington University, School of Media and Public Affairs
Middle Tennessee State University, School of Journalism
University of Houston, Jack J. Valenti School of Communication
University of Nebraska-Lincoln, College of Journalism and Mass Communication
University of Southern California, USC Annenberg School for Communication
Washington State University, Edward R. Murrow College of Communication
University of Kentucky, School of Journalism and Telecommunications
Iowa State University, Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication
Ball State University, Department of Journalism"

Your ACT is a little low, but GPA on target for Marist. Average ACT at Quinnipiac is 25. Both have good journalism programs.

@elizard St. Bonaventure at #5 is worth a look. It is one of the top programs in a small and intimate setting. It has one the top newspapers, literary magazines and radio stations. And it’s students get top internships and seem to win lots of writing awards.

-Auburn University
-Canisius College
-Drake University
-Ithaca College
-LIU Brooklyn
-Mercer University
-North Central College
-Ohio Wesleyan University
-Point Loma Nazarene University
-Saint Michael’s College

Elon is a possibility, it may be too late to apply though.

IIRC, Elon accepts applications until at least the 15th…

If you’re accepted to Mizzou – the best journalism school in the country – then I would go there

All of those protests … you couldn’t ask for a better environment for a journalism student.
