Does anyone have any experience with applying late to boarding school? I was thinking of applying to a few boarding schools if I don't get in to the local private day school. If I were to do this, I would retake the SSAT. I'm interested in applying to Andover, St. Paul's, Deerfield, and Exeter (after looking at their course guide). Even if I were to be rejected, I would still get a feel for the process and the schools would know that I have an interest in them. What do you think?

I wouldn't do it, because you'd be put on the WL, and I think it would be hard to get in as a WL late candidate than as a normal one. Retake the SSAT if you like, but I'd apply next year.

I don't think those are schools that take late applications. It might be a waste of money and time. Go onto Boarding school review and there are a good number of schools that take late admissions, I think Loomis-Chaffee is one and Northfield Mount Hermon

I know that Exeter takes late applications, but I couldn't find anything on the websites of the other schools I mentioned above.

You've listed the schools where it's virtually impossible applying late if your name isn't Trump. They have waitlists overflowing with kids they want to take, legacies, athletes.....Well, if your dad is Denzel Washington, maybe (that would make you a rich, famous, athletic URM!).

And Jonathan, don't go by courses in a book. Do you realize that at all of the schools all of those classes are not offered every year. Not enough kids sign up or the teacher who taught it left....

yeah..i wouldn't apply now...next year..

Also, didn't you get into a local prep school? And jw...why did you apply for local prep school now instead of bs?

Loomis Chaffee is a great school, they had the highest number of National Merit Scholars in private schools in Connecticut this year (15)- more than Choate!

I tried to find Loomis on BSR, but I couldn't seem to find it.

I will find out if I get in or not sometime next week. I applied to prep school instead of boarding school because I didn't feel that my SSAT scores were strong enough.

Jonathan, why would you apply to places like Exeter,Andover, St Pauls, when you state that your SSAT scores are not strong enough? think about it.
Those are wonderful schools but there are many fine schools that are a bit less selective and would offer you a great high school experience

Good info sabrooks, posts like yours are what's needed now instead of "no news is good news." That one makes me cringe..

Momof2sons, my SSAT score is low, but I feel that I could do so much better on the test. Even if I were to raise by score by thirty points I would feel more confident for applying. Someone on here was accepted to St. Paul's with a 69% SSAT score and she said she was unhooked. (no legacy, URM, etc.)

Jonathan, do you even begin to know her details. The vsst majority of people with a 69 SSAT do not get into top schools. You cn not take one person and generalize that way. Is she from NH? A grad of their summer program. Inner city? Play a rare instrument.

Honestly, like most kids she probably doesn't know what a hook is.

What have you learned from the results here??!!!.

As I hear it, the competition for prep/boarding school admissions was fierce this year (glad we did it 2 years ago!). Peers of son # 2 who did apply to bs met with incredible odds.

We learned from one that at Governor's Academy--a fine school but less well know and less competitive than SPS, Exeter etc had 750 applicants for 100 freshman slots....they had never had that number of applicants...its crazy

My point being is to be realistic--apply to a reach school or 2, but find some where you are a match--even that will be tough

Jonathan,

You're getting a lot of responses to this, so I thought I'd chime in too. Remember that FA is not an option when you apply late. Second, those schools you mentioned rarely take late applications, and if they do, it's just to be added to the wait list. You are basicly waiting for an accepted boy in your grade to change his mind over the summer, and then they look to the list to replace him.

You could consider other schools, but keep in mind you'll have to get new teacher recs, write essays, visit schools with your parents, etc. Just be sure you and your parents are up for it. Otherwise, try again next year. Good luck!

It's probably not a good idea to apply this year but you should definitely retake the SSAT and apply for the '08-'09 school year.

I applied just two weeks late for taft and they didn't take me. it depends on how prestigious the school is, and how many spots they have.

Exeter offers financial aid for late applicants, but I doubt it's as much as regular applicants.

I think I'll just take the SSAT in April and see how I do. If I get into the private day school and get a 75%+ on the test, I'll aim for the top schools. If I stay at public school and get around the same school, I'll still aim for top schools but throw in a few less competitive schools.

Jon..
This is kinda against what everyone is saying, but I got in Andover and Exeter, even though i turned both in late (no legacy). But i think my essays were really good and the lateness was really not my fault (stupid math teacher!!!)

Were you treated as a late applicant, though?

If you were counted as late then you wouldn't have received your decision on March 10.

Did you apply this year or last?
