Hi, I'm going to be applying to the University of Michigan's college of engineering and I was wondering whether applying in the first week of january is considered late? I have strong stats (4.0 uw gpa, sat 2340, good amt of ecs) but I've done some searches on the forum and I've seen people say that Michigan becomes hard to get in even with strong stats when applying late. So I'm just wondering whether the beginning of January falls under the late category? Thank you.

well, i don’t really know if applying in january is really late, but its best if you get your app. completed and sent in as soon as possible. your stats are excellent but you don’t want to take the chance of getting rejected just because you applied late.

thank you, its not a problem of getting the app finished (i could get it finished by the end of this week) but the recommendations wont be there till the first week of january. im just hoping early january isn’t too late

in that case, i think you’re fine.

so if i submit my application (everything except the teacher/counselor recommendations) say this week and have my recommendations come in first week of january, it would be better than just waiting to submit everything at once in first week of january?

Yes, getting the application complete, including responding to the essays/short responses is no small task. I recommend doing several drafts of the essays/short responses, and get feedback. Get those transcripts sent immediately, the holidays are coming and no one will be there starting quite soon. Hover in the office and make eye-contact to let the person who’s mailing them out know you need to get the transcripts mailed out before the holidays. Request the scores from ACT/SAT get sent now.

Yeah I submitted my app right around this time last year and because of the backlog of mail they did not receive all my materials until the very end of January. You definitely want to get everything in ASAP so you are at the front of that backlog rather than at the end. I almost wouldn’t have known until after the deadline if all my materials had been mailed properly.

Definitely go ahead and apply. Send in whatever you can as soon as you can. They know the recs and transcripts are not under your control. If you get your portion in and test scores in, it will look much better. Not a terribly hard app to do either!

Thank you everyone for the input. I’m going to hopefully have my application finished by this week as I’m going to have my English teacher still look over my essays this week. Then I’ll just hope that my recommendations and transcripts get sent out and get there sometime soon.

Hey, I had another question and didn’t see any point in creating another thread. I’ve done a substancial amount of 3d modeling in my free time so I was wondering do you guys think it would be a good idea to send the adcom some pictures of models that I’ve done in the Additional Information part of the application? Thanks.

If you’re applying for art school then absolutely do it. If not then I think it’s excessive. Perhaps if you’re thinking of double majoring in Art and something else, but otherwise I wouldn’t.

I don’t know about the pictures, but to answer your original question, yes January is considered pretty late but with your stats you shouldn’t have a problem getting in.

SpaceUnion, I do not personally believe it’s excessive. The school is looking for passion and talent, and for people who have committed to mastering skills. Your 3D work, if it’s really good and worthy of regional recognition etc., is worth submitting as a supplemental. Certainly no harm in it if it’s not “taxing” to the reviewers – and I can’t see why it would be. Now 17 LOR is another story…that’s taxing : )
And PS - modeling is germane to COE

I applied Jan 1 with horrible stats compared to yours. Don’t worry, your credentials are outstanding.

Thanks guys. For my work, would it be okay if I linked to my photobucket album as I have all my work on there or should I put images on the additional info word pg (which would limit me cuz of the size limit on the doc that can be uploaded)?

^ Maybe you could print it out and send it in a separate envelope with your transcript and everything else? That way, they would be sure to see it.

My transcript has already been sent out though so I can’t do that. :/

If your teacher is mailing his/her recommendation, you could add it with the letter? Maybe ask your teacher to add a sentence about your 3D work. My teacher rec contained 4 pictures too, and since they’ll be in the same envelope as your teacher rec, they’ll see them for sure.

How about 150 - 200 pixel thumbnails that are hotlinked to the photobucket album? That way, they get a gist of the work, in small still form, in case they don’t wish to link off, but have access to the full meal deal if desired? Remember the “just don’t make them work extra” motto!
Cheers,
K

That would’ve actually been a good idea but the online app converts the Word docs into PDFs and gets rid of the hyperlinks that I attached with the pictures. I’m just going to go ahead and put thumbnails in the document and just add a weblink to my photobucket account so if they are interested they can just go there.
