I am really not interested in many schools in-state (Florida), and I am only considering applying to one school here (UF) as a safety and the security of Bright Futures. I think that I have finally narrowed down my list, but I am beginning to grow concerned about my selection. I understand that UF admissions is becoming more and more selective each year, and I don't want to sound conceited, but I don't think it'll be a problem for me. The only other issue is that most of my out of state schools are elite private schools where admissions is never guaranteed.

So my dilemma: should I add more in-state schools as safeties (such as UCF and FSU) even though I am not remotely interested in staying here, or should I take the risk of applying mostly out of state? I'm not really asking for a chances thread style response, but I'm curious what others have done in this situation and if this is a common process to almost disregard in-state schools.

I'm in somewhat of a similar situation. I live in Nebraska - probably the most boring state to live in. I don't really want to stay in state, though my parents wanted me to apply to 3-4 state schools as safeties. Instead, I'm only applying to one (though I'm guaranteed admission). The only advice I can give you is to not apply to any schools you can't picture yourself attending. It's a waste of money, a waste of resources, and a waste of your time.

techno, although I'm not applying to colleges yet, I'm the same way as you. I'm goin to apply to UF as my safety.

I was thinking that I can still apply to OOS schools, that aren't elite private universities. Although you won't receive Bright Futures in OOS schools, you can still receive forms of scholarships, if you apply to FSU/UCF/UNF level schools.

I was looking at a thread before and saw you live in Broward. ME TOO! haha.

I only applied to UF and Miami last year as safeties; UF was my absolute LAST choice out of twenty schools. My guidance counselor pushed for me to apply to either UCF or FSU as another safety (since UF "wasn't a safety for me"... such crap, but I digress). I couldn't bring myself to do it and was accepted to both schools... To each his own, I guess.

thesmiths, not to bash you. you dont understand the florida stuff. EVERYONE (92%) of the people from most schools go to an IS school (FSU,UF). we want to distinguish ourselves and not be like everyone else, and go to an good OOS school. Rather than having FSU or UCF as a safety, why not UNC, also a public school, or any of the UC's.

And soccerstar, UNC and the UC's are definitely NOT safeties for us simply because we're out of state. I was accepted to UCLA but I'm pretty sure the admissions officers were drunk when they chose me... But it was most definitely not a sure thing.

Ohh i know, I was just showing an example that there are other schools out there that can be "considered" safeties for some, other than FSU, UCF etc.

Sorry, I guess I was too vague.

What I meant was that, there could be some circumstance (i.e - family) that might require that you stay in-state or something. I think OP should apply to one IS school that he/she would be comfortable at. Not to say that it's his/her first choice school, though.

Ohh my badd then. Although there are the positives to going to an IS school. (full ride bright futures), I'd rather apply to safties OOS for some reason. Probably cuz I lived in NY til 6th grade where it was really competitive and I'd never heard of like FSU or UNF or UCF ( not bashing these colleges )

You all should look up yesterday's Zits cartoon in the comic pages.

The Ivies I understand. Top ranked LACs I understand. Top non Ivies I understand. However, why would anybody pay out of state tuition at somebody else's flagship state college? And lose your Bright Futures to boot?

To the OP: I was in the exact same situation last year. UVA and W&M, though they are very competitive were my safeties. When I told people that, they were all "you need a definite in." But I was confident in my chances at both, since my parents both went to UVA and I was well above the stats for both schools. I didn't want to apply to schools with students who had stats far lower than mine just as a safety because I knew I would not be happy if I were not surrounded by peers of the same intelligence level. I didn't want to risk getting stuck at that school. Just like I anticipated, I got a likely letter from UVA and was accepted to both. If I were you, I would stick to your one IS stafety if you feel comfortable about getting in and think you could survive going there. Don't apply anywhere you don't want to go. If you get rejected everywhere (which most likely will NOT happen), take a year off, reassess, and reapply.
