applying online ??

hey, its about time to start applying to colleges, and some colleges im applying to like Northwestern and Columbia offer a chance to apply online. is this is a good idea, or should i just request an application by mail?

thx

Best choice and best way to keep track of what is going on for your application at any given school.

A lot of colleges say that they prefer online applications, but I can't see how that would ever translate into a better shot at admission. A complete application includes:

Application form (could be in two parts - include $)
Attachments (essays, activity-lists, resumes, supplements to the common app for specific schools)
GC rec - mailed by hs
Teacher recs (2) - mailed by teachers
Transcript - mailed by hs
Mid-Year Senior Transcript - mailed by hs

If you apply online, you still have to mail the attachments. The college will then print off a copy of your application form and attached the things you mailed to it. This is only my opinion, I would rather attach the attachments myself and mail it all together.

Keep track of everything closely. It is surprisingly easy to forget whether something was sent or not when you are dealing with 7 or more schools.
