Applying OOS

I'm really interested in applying to UVA, but before I decide to apply, I need to know how much harder it is to get in out of state. I have about a 3.2 UW GPA in a very rigorous schedule, and a 30 ACT. Is UVA realistic for me? Also, how good is financial aid for out of state students?

With a 3.2 UW GPA, U-Va is not a realistic school for you – in or out of state – unless you are a recruited athlete. Your ACT score is irrevelant with this kind of GPA. You will not get into U-Va.

That is not 100% accurate. I’ve been told repeatedly it is possible for me to get into UVa. I have a 3.3 uw with 4.2w. Although I don’t have a 30, I have a 32 and a 2100 with perfect 700 splits. It’s possible you just need a lot to make up for it.

Thanks. I have a huge upward trend and one of the hardest schedules at my school. I also go to a private prep school, and a 3.2 at my school is definitely not the same as a 3.2 an an average high school.

Not saying you will or will not get in but here’s a little frame of reference from an Out of Stater

I got accepted with a 5.1 GPA, extremely difficult schedule and a 2150 SAT.
My friend got wait-listed with a 4.7, great extracurriculars and a 2200
My other friend got rejected with a 4.4, no extracurricular and a 2100.

While I’ll definite say that strength of schedule and scores are extremely important, thats not all a school cares about. If you can put something on your application, like extracurriculars or essays that really grab the attention of the admissions officer, you never know what could happen. From one OOS to the next, best of luck!

Guarantee – next year this poster will be posting that he did not get into U-Va.

Note also that the OP didn’t get a 30 on the ACT. He got a 26.
