Applying out of State At Virginia Tech

I am applying from california so I have no idea about the university system there. I was wondering how applying out of state will affect my chances and any other things that would be nice to know?

Also oos state here. Anyone know how merit aid is at VT?

not an admissions expert at all, so can’t help.

Don’t expect merit aid your freshman year, after that it depends on your department. There are a lot of ‘went to xyz county high school’ type scholarships in the college of engineering…and all of the counties are in VA with one random one in NJ IIRC.

To get merit aid, at least in the COE, you better be at or very very near the top.

Here is the link the stats of incoming freshmen.

Each college is broken out by instate and out of state. You can judge for yourself whether it helps to be out of state or not. Also look at the trends for the past few years to see if oos is increasing or decreasing.

As to merit aid, there appears to be limited amounts available but VT’s tuition is pretty reasonable compared to being oos at other institutions like Penn State or UI.
