applying to a college

if i apply to a college as a premed major, will i have a better chance of getting in?

Major plays a very small role (if it's even considered) in admissions, because many students will change their minds at least once during their undergraduate years.

pre-med isnt a major, you cant apply to a college as a pre-med major.

If you mean apply as a science major, then yes it could make a world of difference...traditionally it is easier to get in a college's school of science then it is to get in their business/engineering school (or any other school, if they exist)

NYU is a perfect example...chances of admissions are much better applying as a bio major then if you were to apply to Stern

But majors within a school (School of Engineering, School of Arts of Sciences, etc.) won't make a difference, right?

When you're applying to colleges, there's a spot where you can indicate that you intend to pursue a pre-med track, but Doogie is right that pre-med is not a major (although apparently some schools do offer a BS in Premedical studies, but that's not the norm, nor is it a requirement for med school)

usually no, unless theres not many people applying to a particular major and they want to increase the numbers.

Ive read its easier for men to get accepted to top notch schools if they apply for nursing.

so what is the pre for? I need help understanding this. So i take a major that would relate to the pre stuff? For example, i major in biology and take premed classes?

Pre med is a series of courses that a student has to take before taking the MCAT and applying to medical school. They are:
A year of Freshman Chemistry along with the appropriate laboratory courses.
A year of Organic Chemistry along with laboratory courses
A year of Biology along with laboratory courses
A year of Physics along with laboratory courses
A year of English
A year of Calculus or other advanced math classes, including Statistics

You can major in anything you want, although most people will tell you to stay away from engineering (the reason being that it's extremely difficult to obtain a high GPA with engineering).
