I am currently attending a CC and have been working towards completing my engineering prerequisites so that I can transfer into a University engineering program.

However due to circumstances at home, my parents are forcing me to move out soon because they feel I am not progressing quickly enough in school. This has caused me to consider options that would quicken my attempt to transfer to university by any means necessary.

I am currently able to transfer to most universities in my state for various liberal arts or business/finance majors because they have very few general education prerequisites. How bad of an idea is it for me to apply as a Industrial Technology/Computer Information Systems etc major, and then later apply to switch into engineering once I have completed my higher level physics/calculus courses(assuming they even let me take those courses)? I have heard various stories about how at some schools this strategy is easy, and at others the administration will almost never let you do that.

I dont want to be stuck in a major I have no intention of staying in. But I feel that time is running out for me and my options are quickly fading.

Has anyone else switched to engineering after being accepted for a different major? How difficult was it to switch? What was the process like for you? Any advice would be much appreciated.

So, what is the advantage of just applying into a major you are not interested in? Will your family give funding if you go to a 4 year school but not for any longer at the CC or something?

As far as transferring goes, yeah its been done. At my school you can’t transfer until spending one year at the school though so you may want to check out the specific rules. My buddy transferred into a psyc degree because he didn’t have all the pre-reqs he needed to get into the engineering school. He was already in engineering at another, lesser, school but hated it so bad there that the year in the penalty box was worth it because he used it wisely and made sure to take a lot of courses that would count as his electives. He successfully transferred over to engineering after the year and having kept his GPA up to par.

It would depend on the school you are going to and their procedures. However, you should consider Engineering has or is becoming impacted nationally, so its becoming more difficult to switch in. You should also be consider the priority. majors typically get first pick to classes, then everyone else. Although I’m a bit confused on the rush. I understand about your parents, but admissions are closed for this upcoming school year. for most school you’d have to wait until fall 2015 to enter. That gives you another year at CC possibly. You could use the year to get more eng prereqs. If you are missing one or two classes, you should be able to get in.
