Private LACs don't have the type of quotas that state schools do. I imagine one of the reasons why 75 percent of carleton's student body is from with in state is because there's more people who are familiar with carleton from that state, or at least there's more people from that state willing to attend and stay in minnesota. Minnesota doesn't strike me as a very popular state for out of staters. Chances are that if they can get into Carleton, most out of state students choose to attend to an equally good LAC, due to location(east coast).

Sorry, folks. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but an overwhelming percentage of the student body at Carleton hails from out-of-state.

hey "insiders guild to college" by the Yale Daily News says differently

Carleton is 73% out of state and 27% in state. (usnews)

In any case, it won't hurt you to be from out of state. If you are from a state that sends few students to Carleton, it might even help you.

Mostly out of state.

well what do you know

the Yale book has several typos...guess that was one

In terms of admissions, Carleton considers 3 factors to be "very important" (rigor of HS record, class rank and academic GPA), legacy is one of 10 "important" factors, and geographic residence one of 4 factors that are "considered."

Short answer, OOS and legacy will help, but you'll need the credentials, too

what if my school doesnt cal rank or my would-be rank is messed up becasue of a poor frosh year?

Carleton looks at the total application - they want to see someone who has a passion for learning, is inquisitive, and has a good sense of humor. Good luck!
