I'm a future CAS applicant but recently my interest in AEM has grown. I would love to go to AEM if CAS does not admit me (yes I know AEM might be more selective).

I've read someone's comment on here that 1% of people who are rejected by their first choice get into their second choice. Where can evidence for this claim be found?

i am wondering about this too…
i plan to apply to AEM and then hotel has a backup. since hotel is supposedly easier to get into would i possibly not get in because it is not my first choice school if i got rejected from AEM?

There are some cases I’ve heard about where admissions has actually called a candidate, said you don’t fit as well for choice#1 would you consider choice #2? Percentages likely not high.

But IMO to make any sense you have to have an articulated, actual logical thought process where these two colleges make sense for you. For example, if you are applying to AEM#1, then wouldn’t you rather attend another undergrad business school, vs. the liberal arts curriculum of CAS? Hotel may be somewhat easier entry than AEM statistically, but successful applicants have to demonstrate that they actually fit there, and probably not all AEM students can equally make that case.

If I were to apply to two colleges, CAS would be my first choice and AEM in CALS would be my second. Sorry about the confusion.

I’m an international student applying to a mix of liberal arts programs and business programs both in my country and in the U.S. I want to be a consultant eventually. I prefer the flexibility of CAS (I’ll be able to have multiple liberal arts concentrations) but undergraduate business is a nice alternative. For my safeties I am applying to many business programs in my country because arts students tend not to fare well in the job market here (BAs are overlooked in the business world here) and I do have a great interest in business, I’d just rather study economics + whatever else I feel like for 4 years instead of studying business extensively.

That being said, I would choose an excellent business program like AEM over most other programs I am applying to.

I’m probably only applying to CAS, I only made this thread seeking confirmation that the 1% figure is correct… I know there’s someone out there who can provide evidence!

yes, it is correct. at an info session at CAS I went to last year, the admissions lady said that the second choice is kind of a gimmick and that they only passed on something like 50 apps to the second choice college.

yeah i heard the same thing. i applied to CALS #1 and CAS #2 and was waitlisted at CALS (but with a spring 2010 TO to AEM!) and was wondering about the second choice college so I called - they basically said that it is difficult to have to pass on all those applications to the second college (just imagine making them read ALL those additional essays and stuff), and that I think only 2 people this year got into their second choice as opposed to not getting in

I have heard that I was an unusual case…I was not accepted to CALS as a Bio + Society major, and had CAS as 2nd choice, and I was accepted there…

I was going to apply AEM as a first choice and CAS as a second… I talked to an admissions counselor who told me that the alternate choice is only in place for the admissions to pick which school is better for you. Would you all disagree with that? I want to be at Cornell more than I want to be an undergrad business major, so would you recommend making the CAS my first choice? Also, I’ve heard it is not terribly difficult to transfer into the AEM program internally, can anyone confirm this?
