Applying to a UC and/or Calstate without a highschool diploma.

Just wondering if there are any success stories on applicants that got in or are currently awaiting an answer from a school. I never got my hs diploma (or anything equivalent) and I applied to UCLA, UCSB, Berkeley, Calstate Fullerton, and Calstate Long Beach. So far I've made it to the final review to Long Beach so I think that's a good thing, and that's not even my sector school, Fullerton is. So has anyone here been accepted to any schools without a highschool diploma. just wondering!

I couldn’t find anything explicitly saying that you need a high school diploma. But you do need a high school diploma to get financial aid.

You can take the CHSPE, which is equivalent to a high school diploma in CA. This would seem like a good idea since all the schools you’ve listed are in California. It’s one test, which just tests math and English. (no more than, i believe, you’d need to graduate college)

It’s about ~3-4 hours and if you pass you get your HS diploma. And, if you apply ahead of time, it’s only like $100, which is a drop in the bucket compared to how much you’d spend if you needed financial aid.

Thanks. Ill check that out

Since you already applied, good luck.

That said, you might have much better chances if you get something equivalent to a high school diploma (i.e. CHSPE) and do a couple years at a community college first. Even people with high school diplomas are having difficulties getting into the schools you applied to.

^ i was actually under the assumption that the person had already completed IGETC. To apply as a freshman, i think you’d need a high school diploma. So the next step i imagine would be the community college route, for which no HS diploma is necessary i believe, at least to take classes.

So, under the assumption that they completed IGETC, including the math, it seems reasonable that they’d know enough math to pass the CHSPE, since the CHSPE tests for a lower-level math than is needed to transfer. And this is why i recommended that they just take the CHSPE.

If on the other hand, they didn’t complete any community college course work, i doubt there’s any four-year college that would admit them. There’d just simply be no guarantee that the person would be adequately prepared to attend the college.

For freshman applicants:

CSU: [CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - Graduation Requirement](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)

UC: oddly, it is hard to find mention of whether high school graduation is required here:
[University of California - Admission requirements](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/freshman/requirements/index.html)
But if it is an issue, there is also “admission by exception”:
[University of California - Admission by exception](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/freshman/requirements/admission-by-exception/index.html)

For transfer applicants:

CSU: [CSUMentor - Plan for College - Transfer Students - Upper-Division Transfer Requirements](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Upper-Division Transfer | CSU)
Note that high school graduation requirement is listed only for lower division transfers, not upper division (junior) transfers.

UC: Again, rather vague about high school graduation:
[University of California - Admission requirements](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/transfer/requirements/index.html)

Based on this, you’ll need something equivalent to a HS diploma.

[College Guide](http://www.cpec.ca.gov/collegeguide/AdmissionRequirements.asp)

Yeah. I forgot to mention on a transfer and applying for my junior year at these universities. I already have all my classes done. I’m just taking a statistics class that UCLA and UCSB are asking for.

I’ve known a few who did the CC TAG to a UC route without a high school diploma. Don’t know of any that went directly, but it could happen. Good luck.

If you’re denied, do the CC to UC route.
