Applying to another NSF-REU?

I'm searching for REU's and I was wondering, are these programs specially for people without research experience? Does having experience put me at a disadvantage? What are people's success applying to another REU program while already having one under one's belt?

During my search, the majority of the REU's state that women and underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply, as well as undergrads from colleges with few research facilities. A few REU's explicitly state that they will only consider undergrads with the above qualifications, while a majority state some standard academic criteria and include the above qualifications. Are all REU's, in general, strictly for the above groups while only a few explicitly state this?

In addition, If I already have research experience and looking for a more advanced program (given a chance to publish), where would you recommend looking?

Thanks in advance!

The REU internships are targeted to undergrads seeking research experience. I am a community college student in southern california and really want to expose undergrads interested in major in science or engineering related majors to apply. I think you should give it a shot, most of them really need applicants too. I am applying to the Harvard Forest Ecology internship this summer. Good luck to you
