Hey out there…anyone applying to Bard? If so, what are your stats? Thanks!!

Name: Molly

ACT: 28 - 21 on math, 25 on science, 32 on reading, 33 on english
Location: Frankfort, KY
Class rank: 28 in 151

Please let me know if you think I have a chance or if you'd like to read some essays or if you'd like some input on yours.

I'm a freshman at Bard and I would say that you have a great chance of being admitted to Bard. Essays, Extracurriculars, Teacher Recs., and Grades are the most important things. When I was applying, admissions said that they place most weight on your essays. They said they like essays that reveal what is important and passionate to a candidate. For instance, I wrote two essays, one on the death penalty and the other on music. They especially like it when students take chances and act boldly. Let me know how things go. Bard is an amazing college, I've learned so much, both inside and outside the classroom, since I've been here. Good Luck!

Hey...that's great that you like Bard so much. I've just recently decided to apply and the more I learn about the school, the more I like it. I like the fact that they place more weight on essays, extracurriculars, etc than test scores and numbers. I think my essays might be the strongest pieces of my application so I hope this works well for me!

I'm really excited about the Conservatory of Music at Bard, and the mandatory double-degree program there. I've applied (except for an incomplete supplement). My stats:
GPA: 3.97
SAT: 1450 (800 V, 650 M), SAT II: 800 Fr, 780 WR, 600 M IIC
In Tennessee.
ECs: Music is the most important thing in my life. It's not really an EC, since I'm applying for a pre-professional music degree at the Con. Also hiking, teaching music lessons, honor council and big brother program at school, reading to disadvantaged preschoolers.
My common app essay is ok, but my supplemental essay-- assuming I ever finish it!-- should be really good. I'm doing the argument question.

I did the typical/atypical day question...I think it came out pretty well, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I want to pursue a major in film, Bard is supposedly good for that.

(by the way, this is Rhapsody posting on Chrisso's sn)

cherubetry, can you tell me your stats when you applied? I'd love to get an idea whether or not I could get in.. its my dream school. Could i see some test scores and gpa and what not as well? It would be really cool if you could send a sample of one of your essays - but i understand if you dont have one anymore. Thanks!

I agree, that would be really helpful, just to give me an idea of where I stand. Thanks!!

I had about a 3.4 at a very competitive private school in Minneapolis. I did not submit my SAT I scores, but I submitted my SAT II scores: LIT: 700, MATH 1C(I think that's what the test was called): 630, and Writing: 700. I did alot of EC's in High School. I was the editor of our literary magazine, I had 2 leading roles in our Musicals and Plays and several supporting roles. I directed "A Midsummer Night's Dream" my senior year. I also was President of Peer Helpers, and Model UN. I also went to Interlochen Arts Camp for 2 summers, and travelled to Italy to study opera for one summer. I also did NATS and All-State, so music was my biggest thing. Any people applying to the conservatory? I'm really excited for the conservatory students to come!! We need more classical musicians and fans!

I don't think I have my essays saved on this computer, because my parents bought me a new comp. for college. Oh, and I also did IDP, so I got to meet with admissions, one-on-one, to discuss my essay, which I'm sure helped a lot. I highly recommend IDP...but I don't know how much longer it will exist at Bard since they are recieving increasingly more applications each year (they recieved 5,000 application this year!).

If you would like to learn more about the school, try looking around the Bard livejournal community: http://www.livejournal.com/community/bardcollege/ It's a great way for prospective students to learn more about the school on a more personal level. Last year, I remember I looked through the livejournals of students attending the schools I was considering. I learned more about what life was actually like there, aside from the glossy perspectives of the brouchures and college guides.

Feel free to ask any questions! Good Luck!

Wow, you have impressive stats! I don't have one thing that I can call my "thing," I've pretty much spread myself throughout a few things when it comes to my ECs. I did start up a community service organization at my school but I don't know how much that will actually help me. Thanks for your post, it was very helpful.

I'm applying regular decision.

SAT I: 1420 (800v 620m)
SAT IIs: 740 Writing 730 US. History 700 Literature

Rank: 207/1140

AP scholar w/distinction

extensive music ECs
varsity hockey
model UN ambassador
amnesty
blah blah blah

Wow...you have some good scores. My scores...haha not so good.

My SAT 1:440(V) 800(M)and SAT2 :MATH2 ,PH ,and CH are all800.
actually i dont know whether should i send my SAT1 score.

I don't think you can specify which SAT scores to send. They send them all. If you have taken the SAT I, it will automatically be sent along with the SATII scores. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

If this helps any, here are my stats. I was accepted IDP in November.

GPA: 3.9 UW
SAT: 2120 CR:790 M:600 W:730
SATII: Lit: 730 Bio: 720
ECs: A lot of music stuff (I play bassoon and submitted a CD and musical resume, I also sing and play bass clarinet), I'm the president of an environmental club at my school, I also participate in a literary magazine club, and two groups about diversity and respect, and so on. My primary volunteer activity was tutoring ESL students.
I'm sure I had great reccomendations (both academic and one from my private music teacher), and I was very proud of my essays.

We have almost an identical record... I just play French horn. Are you male or female and what state are you from? Maybe we'll play in orch together!

A side note: one of the tracks on the CD I submitted is Telemann's Bassoon Sonata in F Minor (which is virtoustically difficult on the horn due lack of keys but lots of fun. Have you played it?

I'm a female from New York. Unfortunately, I've never played that song. :)

Goal: Major in Music Composition

GPA: 3.6 weighted (I'm an AP student, just messed up fresh/soph year)
White Male, parents didn't attend college which I hope will help me. I'm the first generation.
Amazing (godly, even) recommendations from English and Band teacher.
I took (by choice...what a baaaad choice) summer courses at a prestigious private school for two summers.
SATs were at the average mark, subject tests were slightly above average.
I sent in my junior research paper for a supplement. It was on reality and perception using alice's adventures, of course, and I received an A.

Here's my laundry list: Treasurer of Student Council Executive Board for past three years, President of Latin Club, Peer Leader, Darfur Committee, started a gay-straight alliance, was in Key Club for a few years but I stopped caring about that cookie cutter organization, National Latin Honors Society, International Thespian Society + drama club.

(Keep in mind I want to be a composition major)
I've been in marching band since 7th grade, going from a regular member, to drumline captain, to drum major. My two years as drum major, I lead my band to two championships. My band director's letter talked about my leadership and mature understanding of music. I've arranged/composed music for my band since 2005, and this past year I've composed for two additional high schools in a competitive circuit. I've marched in a world champion drum corps for two years, coming up on three, and was given a chance to study trumpet (my major instrument is marimba) under nationally recognized players and instructors. Attended a band/leadership camp, too.

I sent in three of my best compositions which hopefully sealed the deal, but like the majority, I feel so insecure. Were all putting our hearts onto a piece of paper, sending out to some some random people who control a part of our future, and we can't do anything besides wait. I've waited this long to post my stats up...I just couldn't handle the suspense any longer. Not that doing this is going to make or break it, but it's better than waiting on a letter that won't come any sooner than April no matter how much sleep you lose. Do you think I could get into Bard assuming that they liked my compositions? (since you're not music profs and can't listen to them)

Good luck and happy waiting...

All you music kids! I'm jealous--not a musical bone in my body. But music-loving bones, plenty.

I'm a female honed on Neuroscience, particularly (Biochemistry).
Terrible SATs for Bard: 2020. (700W, 680R, 640M)
AP student, etc. etc.
Had a 4.0--but lost the ***** in AP Calculus right before midyear reports were due.
Luckily, current rank is still 1/475.
EC: International Thespian Society, Historical Reenactments, Library/Animal Shelter/Arts Festivals Volunteer, Society of Women in Science, German Club, more independent international travel than you can shake a stick at, started a Philosophy Club, Brain Bowl, STARS, LINKS, and a lifetime of ballet.

I'm praying for a science scholarship. Essays were on the subject, got a phenomenal letter from my AP Chemistry teacher (a PhD from Berkeley)...

(...$$$! Give me $$$, please!)
