I’m a current junior and I recently visited Barnard and Columbia. Honestly, I love both schools and would be honored to go to either of them. I’ve heard of Barnard mentioned as a “backdoor” to Columbia in some of these posts and I was wondering, would Barnard be suspicious of my application if I apply to Columbia as well? What if I apply ED to Columbia and get deferred?

First, Barnard would have no way of knowing you applied to Columbia unless you tell them. Admissions to both Columbia College and Barnard are separate entities.

Not sure what kind of answer you are looking for here. If you were deferred by Columbia ED and then accepted to both Barnard and CC, then you would obviously have a choice to make. One of my daughter's first year roommates was accepted to both Barnard and CC and chose Barnard.

Look very carefully at both programs...they differ in significant ways, the most obvious being CC's core curriculum requirements. This factor will make your undergraduate experience much more academically regimented but if the core is your thing, that will be okay with you. Also, do a search on these boards about Barnard's advising vs CC's. In my opinion, that is also a significant factor.

The idea of Barnard being a "backdoor" to Columbia is patently false. The two undergrad experiences are very different, even though they occur on the same campus and students are intermingled. And there are students who are denied admission to Barnard and who are accepted at CC...

Are you sure they don't share applicant lists?

Two totally seperate schools ... Columbia and Wellesly, for example ... are not allowed to share lists of candidates by law (or to share admission outcomes either). I would think Barnard and Columbia are held to the same standard even though they both have a relationship with Columbia University.

Absolutely sure they don't share applicant lists.

Not to say the Barnard adcom aren't adept at recognizing an applicant who really thinks they want CC but are just applying to Barnard "in case". I would be willing to bet that if that somehow came across in an application, that person would be rejected.

I was rejected from Columbia ED but I really do like Barnard and had always intended on applying RD.
Does my rejection from Columbia prohibit me from applying to Barnard? please help!

No, it doesn’t prohibit you from applying to Barnard. My D applied to both (RD for both) but got her Barnard acceptance first. It was her first choice and she didn’t even really care whether she got in anywhere else after that, except that Columbia may have meant fewer student loans. She did not get into Columbia.

Thank you for this! Doing my Barnard application right now!
