Applying to brown!

is there a point in applying to brown if you dont have a 4.0?? i hope they look at other stuff really closely. i wonder what impact supplemental recommendations have on admissions process. i hope they read them at least! i heard brown was the only ivy to actually look through everything really carefully and not just base it all on numbers before even considering reading essays and stuff. AHHHH.

i applied with a 3.6 and 33 act with 700-720 on 4 sat II (chem, bio, math I and math II) who knows it all luck i assume...and on top of that i had my interview today.. they interviewer said that they sit and look at everything bc they are looking for certain people each year... specific people with specific qualities.. if u can juggle plates and they are looking for that.. then hell ur in...

Babycakes,
It's is NOT all about GPA. There have been some kids in my S's school where kids with 4.0 have not been accepted by Ivies. It's more than GPA the schools look at.

A 4.0 from a local public school weighs differently compared to a 3.75 from a top notch Science Magnet school. The Adcoms are completely familiar with the reputation of the schools kids apply from.

If you have ECs that corroborate your interests, this is a big plus.
For someone who is applying to PLME, it helps to have doctor-shadowing as senior experience, together with volunteering hours at a local hospital and perhaps research in a medical area.

I think Adcoms look at the entire package, not just the GPA. They look at how you could enhance various facets of the 'University Community', may it be by your artistic talents or by community service.

I think they take it in the context of your life...but as for comparing a 3.7 from a private top notch school to a public school...I'm not sure if they'd do that. That's punishing the public school kid for no reason. I mean it's not his or her fault that he or she didnt have the opportunity to attend a better school.

Aspen D,

I think Adcoms review more facets than simply the GPA.

They also review the degree of difficulty or challenge the student undertook to achieve that GPA.

If you have a public school student who really pushed himself/herself and undertook a challenging and rigorous course load with AP courses, and was able to keep a 4.0, this applicant will be far more attractive than someone who took an easy course load to achieve a 4.0.

For Adcoms, it's not easy to compare GPAs from the breadth of various public school districts across US. I do know that applying from a reputed school (may it be a Magnet school or a blue ribbon public school) that has an excellent record is a plus for a student since there is 'instant recognition' with the name of the school, prior knowledge about the rigor of courses offered at the school, as well as historical track record of previous students who have done well.

This issue is no different from the one you will face when applying to Graduate schools.........Adcoms will consider a 3.5 GPA from Johns Hopkins or Yale more favorably than a 4.0 from a County College.

I believe that there are a couple of private schools where noone has graduated with a 4.0 St. Paul's School in New Hampshire may be an example. Anything above a 3.5 from a top private school will be regarded as a 4.0 or higher when compared to most public schools. Certainly for Exeter,Groton, Westminster in Atlanta and a slew of New York City privates like Collegiate or Boston's Roxbury Latin,Milton...

Garrity,

Come to think of it, may be it's not a bad idea to start a new thread to find out how many Magnet school and Blue ribbon school applicants are on CC. Might give us a good idea of various top schools that exist around the US.

Yes. There are quite a few in NY/NJ area.....

In my S's Magnet school, 4.0 GPA is nearly impossible but nearly 50 kids get accepted each year at Ivies.

Correction......I meant 50 acceptances to Ivys. There might be some students who had multiple acceptances.

haha i applied with a 3.6 but with a lower act score. i'm just hoping for the best and i applied because i knew if i hadn't applied i would've regretted it. A rejection letter is better than no letter at all, but i really want an acceptance letter ahaha.

haha no worries dude. i have a 3.6 as well. i guess we're all in the same boat. what major are you applying under?

i'm applying under international relations which is a bad idea because its one fo the most popular hahaha but i wrote one of my essays on it so i couldn't change it. haha =/

haha i see i see, i did econ and math. well keep your fingers crossed! :)
