I'll be applying to Clemson as an in-state applicant. I believe I have the stats to stand a good chance of entering their honors college, but I'm not completely sure I want to be part of that during college.

Can I apply to Clemson, as part of the honors college, and if accepted, decline the honors college and just attend Clemson?

I believe you can. I saw someone else say that their kid had gotten in and was planning on declining the honors college. That’s not for sure though.

I don’t see why you can’t refuse the honors college - if Clemson wants you to be in the honors college, surely they would want you as a regular student as well.

Has anyone gotten in the Honors College who wasn’t in the top 3%? Just wondering if the 3% is fairly strict or if they look more at class rigor even if you’re not in the top 3%?

I’ve wondered the same thing, about the 3%. Obviously, it’s not religiously strict. But I suspect it has a strong influence.

I think of it this way: if the Clemson folks don’t know much about an out-of-state school, can they really determine if a 5th percentile student is stellar, and just as strong as a 2nd percentile kid from another, perhaps slightly weaker, high school class? I think not, and in this case the higher ranked student would probably get the benefit of the doubt.

Might be different from in-state schools, they’d know the differences quite well.

Yes, they are two different processes. And if you don’t get into Honors but still come to Clemson, you can apply to Honors during your freshman year.

Anxiously awaiting email with URL link for Calhoun decision 2013, which should arrive before 2/15 at midnight? I’ve notice here that past years have been sooner. PLEASE if anyone has gotten an email can you let us know?? Also, your stats if you are willing to share…
Thanks!

My son received email today with a link to the Calhoun decision, and he was accepted. He’d already received a nice schol offer back in Dec, and this acceptance adds to the “Clemson really wants you” score.

BTW, I have the answer to the question about the 3% cutoff: it’s not strict. My son’s probably in the 5% area in his HS class, but it’s a very strong class (and grading is strict). I imagine that his (very high) SAT score helped his candidacy a bit.

(We’ll seriously consider Clemson, but won’t make a final decision until all the RD results are out.)

My DS got accepted to the honors college today! He got 10,000/year scholarship earlier this year and BTW he is in the top 11% at his school. However he’s has 8 AP’s , GPA 3.89 unweighted and had a 34 ACT. So that 3% ranking is not valid. They are looking at the kids other stats.

Wow this puts Clemson back in the picture.:)

I had no idea what to expect when applying. I got into USC honors but Clemson honors is so much smaller and I am not top 2% but heard today that I got in! I’m roughly top 6% and I have a 33 act and all IB courses. Congrats to everyone!!!
