Applying to College as a Junior

Has anyone here applied as a junior? What was it like? Any advice? Did you end up going to college after junior year?

I heard many colleges prefer you to apply as a senior. I know a kid who got rejected from 20 schools he applied to when graduating a year early (great stats 35 ACT etc.).

It’s just like applying as a senior, except a year earlier.

There are two ways you can do this.

In some schools and school districts, you can try to graduate a year early. This usually requires doubling up on English somewhere along the way, and it cuts into your electives. My brother-in-law did this (a generation ago). If you actually get a diploma, your college options are pretty wide open. But it takes some advance planning, so it may be tough to arrange to do this if you’re going to begin your junior year in a few weeks.

Another possibility is just to apply to colleges without finishing high school. There are colleges that sometimes accept HS juniors for freshman admission, but not all do. And even the ones that do accept juniors tend to be fairly choosy, I think. My sister did this (also a generation ago). She applied to Oberlin while she was in 11th grade; she was accepted and she went. (After her freshman year of college, she actually went and got a GED; she was having trouble getting a summer job because she’d “dropped out of high school.”)

I know that Oberlin will still accept applications from high school juniors (or at least, it would when I last investigated, which was probably in the last 12 months). I’m sorry I don’t know which other colleges do or don’t. If you really want to apply to college in the 11th grade, you can do it, but you’ll have to do some research to find a list of receptive colleges, and you will probably have to accept that applying early will limit your options somewhat.

One thing to consider is the social aspect. If you apply as a Junior you will be the youngest by a full year. At the risk of not being PC, probably more of an issue for a young man than for a young lady.

There are a number of threads discussing early enrollment in the Parents Forum. If you look for them, you will get a lot of useful ideas. Good luck!
