Applying to college? No safety schools

Hi all.

I've lived in another country for the past 18 years of my life and suddenly my family decided for me to attend college in the US.

Anyway, I'm not sure if what I did was right. With a GPA of 96 (100 scale), SAT of 2180, ACT of 33, I only applied to:

top publics: UW-Madison, UIUC, Berkeley, UCLA, UNC, UW (Seattle)
Ivies: HYP Brown Cornell
Other privates: Stanford, USC

Is it wrong that I didn't apply to any safety school?
PS- I didn't apply to any univ in my hometown (lol)

You should know by now whether you have been admitted to UIUC and possibly to Wisconsin. If so, your decision turned out OK because you have at least one admission; if not you will be biting your nails for a while. One should apply to safeties including potentially a home state public university if you can claim a home state, not just because it might be a safety but it is less expensive than others and gives you a place to possibly attend if unexpected financial issues arise that leave your parents unable to pay what is needed for the others.

i think UW-Madison and Washington can qualify as safeties for u if ur ECs and essays and recs were good. also Illinois (unless it was engineering). Illinois decisions are on its status check page so u might wanna check that out

I qualify as a California resident even though I finished HS in another country. I was accepted at UW-Madison and UIUC but OOS tuition is too expensive.

Imo, Berkeley and UCLA are reaches. I just hope I get in to take advantage of in state tuition. I really think I made a mistake with my apps–I should’ve applied to safeties like Cal Poly SLO or something

Usually the closest California CC is the back-up for in-state residents. If you are truly a resident, and you have done the research to know that one or more of the CCCs will let you in after the May 1 reply date, you are OK. But I’d recommend that you pop by the admissions office at that CCC just to double-check everything.

If your family will be full-pay, or you won’t need much financial aid, you also can wait until mid-May when the NACAC space available list is published. Someone will surely post it here at CC.

I think you will be fine, but why didn’t you simply check the box and apply to UCSD, UCSB, etc?

It’s a single application.

Why go to Wisconsin or Washington if you could go to UCSD at in-state tuition?

To give you some real stats, my son, out of state, got into UCLA and UNC with a 2300
SAT, 34 ACT, and a 3.7 gpa, but did not get into Berkeley.

So I would say you will probably get into UNC.

He didn’t have much in the way of ECs though.
