Applying to college of engineering and freshman forgiveness

Hi all,

I’m a sophomore who switched majors over to chemical engineering last year currently taking my fundamentals of engineering sequence in addition to o-chem, physics, etc. At the beginning of next semester I have to apply to actually get into my major. I have a question though.

In spring 2013 I took an honors 5 credit hour calc class that I ended up getting a D in so my GPA went down from like a 3.4 to a 2.94. I used freshman forgiveness which removes the original grade from the calculated GPA (but it’s still on my transcript) and am finishing up regular calc 3 this semester and should get an A, at bare minimum if I fail my final exam an A-. I have 18 credit hours this semester and expect a few A’s and the rest in like the B- to B+ range so my GPA should recover decently to near what I had before. On the website the average admit to the major for autumn is around a 3.2 minimum so I’m not really worried there, I should have that.

My concern is that since admission is kind of competitive will they look at the fact that I had to retake a class (but when I retook it I did extremely well) and hold that against me or recalculate the old grade back into my GPA when they’re doing admissions? If anyone has any experience applying to their major through the engineering school I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks a bunch :)
