I'm fairly new to the site so bear with me.

I have been receiving many e-mails from different colleges telling me to apply to their school. They tell me that there is no application fee and no application essay.

The schools that send the e-mails are good schools, I just don't know if the schools are going to be in my top college choices.

Should I consider actually applying to these schools that send me e-mails? Or is this a waste of time?

You should see how you like the school (geographically, academically, population size) before deciding. Just because it is “free” does not mean it is a good reason to apply. As dodgersmom mentioned, free doesn’t include additional things such as SAT/ACT score, transcripts (we had a fee to send them after our third one or something), and maybe even a trip to the college to see if it is a fit.

But if you genuinely like the school and all of that, I don’t see why you shouldn’t apply.

I agree with above. Take a look at the schools. My daughter has been getting a lot of those offers. Most of the schools aren’t a fit and won’t be applied to. There are 2 that were interesting and 1 that she likes enough apply to as a safety. It’s not a school she would have found otherwise. The school still wants an essay but they will accept an essay written for another school.

I have been told to still do the common app but hit the fee waiver button as these schools, if they want you, will often ask for more information (which is on the common app.)

Don’t apply to them all. If none are interesting to you, don’t bother. If you come across one that seems a good fit… take advantage of the waived fee.

We’ve gotten No application/no long essay e-mails and letters from several schools. They include schools like Tulane, Drexel and Hofstra (and a bunch of smaller LACs).

@endlessgame,

Like lullabies said, if you like the school then consider applying. However, you may well get a dozen or more such offers, so don’t go crazy! :)

"Should I consider actually applying to these schools that send me e-mails? Or is this a waste of time? "

If you have no ultimate interest, then YES, it’s a waste of time. Not only for you (and the fees you’ll need to pay to have your test scores sent), but also for your school. You KNOW that they need to fill out several documents per college you apply to, right? If you casually apply to these colleges just because it’s free but have no deeper interest, then you are wasting MANY peoples’ time.
