How does applying to the different colleges within Berkeley work?

Also, how competitive/selective are the different colleges with respect to each other and other schools (like if you had to rank College of Letters & Science, College of Chemistry, College of Engineering, College of Natural Resources, and CMU MCS and SCS for good measure, which would be 1,2,3,4,5,6)?

At Berkeley, you apply to a division (L&S, CoE, CoC, CNR, CED; Haas is available for transfers); the threshold for admission varies. The Hout report describes this, but the thresholds are likely different now (and the relative selectivity of the different divisions may have changed). You can check each division’s web site to see how difficult changing into it after enrolling is. Note that all entering L&S frosh come in as L&S undeclared. Frosh intending to major in business apply to Haas in their second year.

Within the CoE, you are also applying for a specific major, and changing major requires applying to do so, unless you initially enter as a CoE undeclared frosh.
