Applying to CSU as a political science major, but I have a D in AP Chem. Will I be accepted?

As you can tell by this title, I’m applying to Cal States as a political science major, but I’m receiving a D in AP Chem for the first semester. I have a GPA of 3.5 and my high school index is relatively high for cal states; it’s like 3970 or something. I took AP chem to challenge myself because I initially thought I wanted to major in chemistry because of how well I understood it junior year, but that was because I was in regular chem and I only understood it because it was easy. I’m really scared that I won’t be accepted anywhere because of my D in AP Chem. I was planning to drop AP chem when school started because I knew I wasn’t going to do well, but my counselor and friends encouraged me to stay. Honestly, I regret not dropping because I really don’t get chemistry on this level. Anyway, am I going to be accepted anywhere? I feel so stupid for not dropping and I hate myself because of it. I’m going to drop it second semester, but I was wondering how bad this D would look to the cal states…again, i applied to csulb and csf as a political science major. please help. i’m so anxious i won’t be accepted anywhere!!

Are you in the local service area for either? I think your Fullerton acceptance is a pretty safe bet. I know CSULB is a tough admit if you’re not local. I don’t think they will punish you for taking a challenging course in your senior year. I would try to have your guidance counselor inform admissions of the situation.

Rule of Thumb: No D’s or F’s Senior year for any a-g courses. Each CSU will handle provisional acceptances different but I know a CSUF admitted applicant was rescinded for a D 1st semester English. Call admissions and what out what kind of options are available.

Oops, terrible typing on the phone. Contact each CSU and see what are your options. Do not wait until after May 1 and find out you have no options.

I’m in the local service for CSULB!!

CSULB does not specify a GPA or grade requirement to maintain your provisional admission but they do state you need to pass all a-g courses so a D is not passing. I suggest you call admissions at each school and see what they say.

Provisional Admission
California State University, Long Beach may provisionally admit first-time freshman applicants based on their academic preparation through the junior year of high school and planned coursework for the senior year. The campus will monitor the final terms of study to ensure that admitted students complete their secondary school studies satisfactorily, including the required college preparatory subjects, and graduate from high school. Students are required to submit an official transcript after graduation to certify that all course work has been satisfactorily completed. Official high school transcripts must be received prior to deadline set by the University. In no case may documentation of high school graduation be received any later than the census date for a student’s first term of CSU enrollment. A campus may rescind admission decisions, cancel financial aid awards, withdraw housing contracts and cancel any University registration for students who are found to be ineligible after the final transcript has been evaluated.

Applicants will qualify for regular (non-provisional) admission when the University verifies that they have graduated and received a diploma from high school, have a qualifiable minimum eligibility index, have completed the comprehensive pattern of college preparatory “a-g” subjects, and, if applying to an impacted program or campus, have met all supplementary criteria.

For CSU Fullerton:
I GOT A D IN THE FIRST SEMESTER OF MY SCIENCE CLASS.
You must repeat the class since satisfactory grades in subsequent semesters do not validate previous grades in Science classes. If you repeat the exact same course, only the better grade will be calculated in your GPA.

i already completed requirements for science. i’m taking ap chemistry as an elective.

It does not matter if you have completed the minimum a-g (science) requirements. Some Cal States will rescind your acceptance if you get any D’s or F’s in your Senior year a-g courses. You need to contact each school to find out if this going to be an issue. I would do it now than later since you want to have a backup plan just in case.

Competitive CSU’s like CSUF and CSULB have many qualified applicants that they can not accommodate due to impaction so they may not be as willing as some non-impacted campuses to over look the D.

Is your 1st semester of senior year over now? Did you get B’s or higher in all of your other 1st semester classes?

update: i ended up getting a C in ap chem and got accepted to csulb

Congratulations!! @killuaqueen00

Great news and congratulations !!!
