How much does it matter whether one applies to Medill, Weinberg, the School of Communications etc.? Unlike other universities, they do not ask for different materials depending on the school. Is it just to count how many people are interested in majoring in a particular subject? Do they view the apps differently accordingly?

The different schools are ranked differently in their fields. Ie medill, journalism school, is one of the top schools. Same with the music school. Hence, you can look at the "sat score" thread in here to compare average scores of enrolled students of 2010. Also, take into account that there is a different number of studnets in each school.

Anyways, in terms of the schools, it's easy enough to change them when you get to northwestern. I know a lot of people who dropped out mccormick to weinberg and also into sesp and communications.
