Applying to FA now?

Is it worth applyibg to FA now. I have been accepted to one school with Full FA, another one with 15k and for the third one we did not apply. Is it possible that the school still have funds and give them to me if I qualify. I learned that different schools seem to have their own way awardibg FA

Why do you need to apply for FA at this school now? I thought your family had 30k for tuition coming from your father’s job?
I don’t know how the FA is distributed in this particular school but as a mom of a child who was WL at many schools due to the need of substantial FA, I doubt this school will have the FA now to give you especially since their FA awards went out last week and many schools will have a FA wait list (some don’t) and god knows how many people you would have in front of you for FA on that wait list…plus they offered you a spot as full pay.

Why would you apply to a school as a full pay student if you actually need Financial aid in order to attend? There is a reason there is a deadline for FA. Funds are limited. Sorry, but it sounds to me like you were using this as an acceptance strategy, which is very unethical. To say the least.

In our private day school, you can’t apply as a full pay and then switch it up and ask for FA.

Thanks. I doubt the third one would have funds but I thought it didnt hurt asking. It is hard to ignore that one particular school is covering the difference between the tuition minus my school allowance so the 20k I have to pay at the third one is playing against choosibg it.

My daughter was accepted at her top choice without FA and believe me we not only qualify for it but need it. It was a hard season for FA applicants…they saw a rise in applications for FA (this told to me by many different FA officers from many different schools). I’m going to be blunt here, I find it wrong that you applied for FA and didn’t disclose that you had 20k to contribute (can only assume your parents can afford to pay it since they didn’t apply for FA at all schools) and also the 30k coming from your dad’s employer. This may all be my assumption (that you didn’t disclose it to the full FA school)…but I find it hard to believe that a school would offer full FA knowing that the tuition could be paid in full by both your family and their employer. That FA award could have gone to a student who really needs that full FA (and if you’re wondering we didn’t apply to any of the same schools that you did). If you didn’t disclose the employer contribution and the 20k available from your parents, then you should. It’s the only ethical thing to do. There are great kids accepted into theses schools who are poor, live check to check and would never have a chance to attend a great school if it were not for financial aid…and many of those kids got accepts without FA this year.

Of course we disclose the company contribution. The Full FA means full tuition-company contribution, which is around 20000.

If you wanted some sort of FA at school 3, you should have applied for it ahead of time. I see that you want them to close the gap between the school(s) that gave you a lot and then school 3, but you didn’t apply for any aid in the first place. If it’s something you can afford, then I wouldn’t ask for the money. I got more than enough FA at one place and adequate at another. A family member (not my mom or dad) thought I should ask for more FA from the place that gave me adequate funds, but I said that would be wrong. They gave me enough funds already and we can afford it, plus there’s a kid that probably really needs that extra money I’d be asking for. I was asking for a sufficient amount of aid from all schools, and was just lucky to get a more than sufficient award at the one school and lucky still to get a sufficient award at another.

I know some colleges would match each other colleges and I was wondering if this is a common practice amonh BS

The time for applying for FA has passed; the schools have used up their funding. I find it illogical that you would have applied for FA to only select schools.

You have a very simple choice: Go to the school you want and can afford. It will either cost your family the full tuition or not. That is up to you. The time for asking for (more) money has passed. You need to figure out which school you will attend and let them know. Depending on your decision, funds may be released to the next person in line in the event you do not choose a particular school which will make a family with true need very happy. You took a calculated risk in applying without FA and were lucky enough to be admitted. Either you want to go to that school ,and you can afford it, or you can’t go because you don’t have the money. You have THREE acceptances AND lots of FA. Surely that is enough? If the school that accepted you “full-pay” is your choice, remember you STILL have lots of aid aid there – the company contribution.

yes, to a family with true need! I must say this international FA system is far from being perfect

If that school is Choate, the answer is no.

I guess I will decline one of the FA offers and hopefully that will make someone very happy. We will contact the school just in case Choatiemom and will let you know if they are willing to match the other bS offer

Also understand that if you accept a spot as full pay, you will be expected to remain full pay for the duration of your time at that school. Requesting FA for your second/successive years is very tough. The school will expect you to show a significant, long-lived change in your family’s finances compared to what you submitted when you applied. An example would be the death of the primary earner in your family.

Please help us understand why a full FA award to Andover and 15K to either Concord or Loomis is causing so much angst when most people here would tell you that you won the lottery with full FA to PA (done!) and all of your options are excellent. How do you turn down full FA to what many consider to be the best boarding school in the United States?

(Of course Choate is better, but let’s keep that to ourselves. )

It really seems, OP, that you are treating this as a game. There are real families with real kids that have no (or limited) options for school next year. You have 3 (or more) options and the financial resources to make any of those choices happen for you. Surely you can see that asking for even more doesn’t put you in the best light? I encourage you to be happy with the options you have been given. A focus on what you don’t have is never a good idea. I’d say “good luck” but you already seem to have that.

:) i know, you are right! Most likely will take that offer but I just want to be able to have choices. Btw, I already gave up my place at Concord, MNH. Just considering revisiting 4 but you are right, turning down PA seems crazy. Will see what happens after I revisit

On a extra note, after my second year the company most likely would cover around 95% of the tuition and that is why we can afford to pay the 20k plus difference this year. That is basically I dont want to commit to PA just yet.
I will visit milton, choate and loomis as well

Seriously? You are going to get EVEN MORE tuition assistance and STILL you want more from schools that have had to turn kids down due to limited resources? Where is a dislike button when you need one. This is too much. I am done.

I think that is why i got the FA. Because they know i wont need it the following years

Please stop posting about wanting more FA monies. You already won the big jackpot. Asking for a bigger payout at this point is just crass.

Count your blessings. Be grateful. Stop tormenting the many families that would give anything for even one of your options.
