Applying to graduate school in the future

Hello, everyone--

Long story short, I was just curious how graduate schools evaluate GPA for courses taken at another school. Specifically, I have a couple of courses where I do 4+-credit hours at universities as a non-degree student (for financial reasons) but my home institution only counts each course as 4-credit hours, maximum, and posts "CR" for "credit" on my transcript instead of posting the actual grade. My question is, will graduate schools look at and consider the credit-hours for other schools' transcripts, or just ignore them completely? Thanks.

It really depends on the graduate school, honestly. Some are going to recalculate your GPA with the grades in there, and some are just going to want to see the grades. However, all of them are going to want you to send transcripts from all schools you’ve attended, and yes they will consider the credit hours from other schools that you’ve earned grades at.

BUT if they are general education requirements - unless they are something like English (writing is important in every field) or math or science GEs for math/science programs - you probably don’t have to worry too much about the grades. Do as well as you can, but a few Bs never killed anyone.

Thanks for your answer, juillet. I’m applying to science-related programs. I actually took courses within my chosen major, and one grade isn’t so stellar, but it has less credit-hours because I was unable to take the lab–that’s part of the reason why I asked. I also have some math and science courses outside of my major that aren’t gen-ed’s, but rather courses I wanted to take for a better background, and I’ve been doing well in them. Can anyone else offer some input, please?

Graduate admissions committees aren’t going to care about how many credit hours a course is worth. And mostly likely, they will not ask you to recalculate your GPA based on courses taken elsewhere. When you enter your GPA, you generally use the official one from your home university. As Juillet has said, you still must send transcripts from the other school, even though they aren’t part of your GPA. Adcoms will see those grades.
