Hi, I'm an 8th grader, and I am applying to a couple high schools in the Bay Area this fall. I was hoping to find some CCers who know about (or who have) applying to high schools here. If so, do you think I would be able to ask you a few questions about the process and any advice you'd have....through AIM (it's easiest for me that way)?

If you can, please let me know (I'm not going to ask personal questions lol)

i applied to high schools...both days schools and prep schools like Andover. Um, there's not much you can do. Write excellent essays, if you can study for the entrance exam. Is there an interview? Prepare ahead of time to discuss your classes, extracurriculars, aspirations, interests (i like politics and music) and why you like the school. And obviously, get good grades! GOOD LUCK

o btw make sure u kno the full ciriculum of the highschool u wanna apply to. when i was applying to a magnet school, i found that they didnt have any AP sciences (even tho it was a medically based school) and didnt prepare its students for SAT IIs thru its ciriculum (meaning they only taught molecular biology). And make sure u ask ppl how it is at the school and what colleges ppl went to.

i have friends at branson, lick, and university. i applied to st ignatius (thats where i go), sacred heart, university, lick, lowell, mercy b, mercy sf, convent, and urban. i got in every where. IM me at superstarr567 and i can answer any questions.

also. my sister just finished eighth grade and she applied to basically the same schools i did and got in everywhere. so i have been through the process twice. kind of. so let me know if i can help in any way.

It seems kind of rediculous to me too...unless you need to apply to a magnet school b/c your public one is REALLY bad...but otherwise it just seems like too much pressure for 8th grade.

Thousands of students apply for high school every year and they seem pretty okay with the process and the outcome. If you think it is too much pressure then probably for you it is. Not too many regular public HS can compete with the ones that draw thousands of applications every year.

ah, i go to mercy b. i applied to mercy b and sacred heart cathedral, and got into both. sacred heart was my first choice, though. transportation issues. =

Your public HS doesn't have to be really bad, sorta bad or not bad at all. Many kids apply to HS because even though the local HS is great the school they are applying to has much more to offer them....and is even greater. Don't think you have to have a crap school to justify applying to a great school.

well in san francisco at least, the public schools are pretty bad. there are a few alright ones, but generally they are crappy. there is one that is so good, that you have to apply to get into. and there are more private, independent, or religious schools in my city than there are public schools. and these private schools are phenomenal and offer soo much more than i could hope to get from a public school. so i dont really see anything wrong with applying to high schools. its a personal choice that eighth graders here make. and if you dont like it, then you just go to the public school you are assigned too.
