I'm starting a thread for those who are applying to HWS for regular decision. Tell us a bit about yourself: where you're generally from, what about HWS appeals to you, what kind of major(s) you're considering, what ECs sound interesting, what you might be interested in doing beyond college.

I'm a mom of a Hobart senior and I thought it might be fun for the potential HWS community to learn about each other. I hope this will be interesting. It all depends on who contributes. :)

Well there are countless things that drive me to Hobart- small class sizes, community feel, generally prep-school educated student body, somewhat conservative and THE CAMPUS!

I visited last summer and did some soul searching to convince myself to apply. My interview was Amazing btw. I am from NJ, undecided major but will be interested in performing arts opportunities and Greek life

13all94, it sounds like you’re really sold on HWS. I’m so glad you convinced yourself you should apply! What performing arts are you interested in? The dance department thrives with lots of students participating, the theater department is really lively and the music department has wonderful concerts. If you have any questions, I’ll do my best to answer them!

Hi CarolynB. While searching out info on HWS, I’ve come across a number of your posts. Thanks for putting up this thread.

To answer your question: Service, Personalities, Programming.
The School’s commitment to service is the tip-top attraction for my daughter.
Her cousin is an alum. They are very close and share many interests and abilities in common. Hearing her cousin’s (unabridged) stories makes the school sound more “user-friendly”.
Daughter interviewed with HWS’ regional rep. She was very impressed with the rep’s genuine interest in her extracurricular/volunteer efforts. While, some of the other colleges seem to only care about the stats (GPA/SAT), HWS gave the impression that they “walk the talk” of holistic education.
My daughter is not a “scan-tron focused learner”. She hoping to have interactive college experience where she’s not treated like a number in a grade book. HWS seems to fill the bill on many levels.

D is still WAITING for a decision on her NOVEMBER legacy application. She was told that legacy applications receive priority review. I was really hoping that she would have heard by now. We live on the west coast, and I’d like to send her to Geneva to sample a “real-deal-up-state-winter”. I will need financial aid to help fund her college expenses. So, I suppose that financial aid part has delayed the process somewhat…thoughts???

HWS is her #1 choice. She’s received acceptances from 6 other North East schools (all with merit $$). I hesitate to send her for any visits until we hear (good news) from HWS. But then again. I don’t want to wait too long and limit her options for housing (and other opportunities) at her “in” schools. Gotta go check the mail box…

momneeds2no, I’m not sure what the hardest part is: struggling to decide which schools to which to apply, doing the applications or waiting to hear. It’s such an emotional roller coaster! I’m delighted your daughter is enthralled with HWS; it’s a great school and I know she will have a personal and satisfying experience if that’s what she’s looking for. The old adage does ring true: you get out of it what you put into it.

Regarding her legacy application, I’m sorry but I can’t really help you as I just don’t know how it works. I would encourage you to call the admissions office to get some clarification about when to expect an answer and your desire for your daughter to sample a NE winter, then you can make decisions accordingly. Good luck! Let me know what happens.

Thanks for the empathy! Funny thing is, my D is very calm, cool and collected about the process. She doesn’t want me to call.
Some more questions for those who know the campus…is HWS really a “rich kid” school? We are a family of modest means. Will my daughter be at a disadvantage? Do the majority of students have large allowances? How much money does the average student need for discretionary spending each month? D is taking the EMT certification class in hopes of securing more lucrative employment this summer.

Momneeds2no, did your daughter apply Early Decision? If so, I should think she should have heard by now, but I’m not really in tune with the whole ED process. If she applied Regular Decision, I just don’t know if a legacy application would hear significantly earlier than anyone else. It’s not clear from your posting what application process your daughter is doing. I would expect she would hear by late March, not the beginning of April.

HWS does have some proportion of wealthy kids, but I wouldn’t worry about it. As with any segment of society, there are nice people and there are those who aren’t. There are plenty of kids of modest means who have jobs on campus, my son among them. No, I don’t think your daughter will be at a disadvantage. It’s hard for me to say how much money your daughter will need; it all depends on what she spends it on. My son has worked during the summers to have money to spend on books and spending money. If she becomes an EMT, she should do very well at HWS because they have a very strong EMT program; my son’s girlfriend is pre-med and in the program.

Still no word… I couldn’t stand the wait, so I called. The admissions officer is great. She remembered details from Ds interview and application. In terms of personal attention and professional communication, HWS is the clear leader of all the schools to which she applied. Unfortunately it’s also one of last to issue a decision. In the meantime, merit awards from other schools keep rolling in…

DS is accepted to HWS! He didn’t get the Trustee scholarship but he did get a nice faculty scholarship and grant. I’m still suffering from sticker shock but I think we can do it!

Ruby can you please tell me if your DS applied reg decision or ED? My daughter applied reg decision and also for a Trustee scholarship and we are waiting to hear. Has anyone else who applied Regular Decision heard about their scholarship status (Arts, Trustee, etc) ?? I don’t know how much longer I can stand to wait!!

feismom
My son applied RD, we got the packet in the mail today. I was very surprised because I didn’t think the decisions were being sent out until next week. Good luck!

Ruby, do you live relatively near HWS ?
Sorry to ask, I’m just a nervous trustee/Blackwell applicant waiting to hear and trying to gauge how nervous I should be walking to the mailbox tomorrow :)

cbear I live outside of Boston but our last name is at the beginning of the alphabet. Maybe not hearing yet is GOOD news because DS applied for and did not get the Trustee Scholarship.
You might be getting a “extra-special” packet in the mail :)

Thanks for the info Ruby! Hoping you are right about the ‘extra special’ something. We live about an hour away from Hobart and are toward the end of the alphabet. How about you cbear? I am sitting on pins and needles stalking the postman- nothing in the mail today. Please keep me posted cbear and anyone else out there who has heard or is waiting to hear about scholarships from HWS. I will post an update every day.

D applied RD under the HWS Legacy Program and Trustee.
California. (crystal clear sunny and mid 70s today)
Just arrived home and checked the mail box. Nothing from HWS. I have a theory about why HWS (like some other schools ) wait so long… Will post when D hears her decision.
Good Luck to y’all!

I live in the southern tier and got my decision today. I applied w/Regular Decision for the Trustee Scholarship and didn’t get it, but I got the Faculty and a great grant! :)

hey feismom, I live about an hour away from Hobart as well, and no news today! Same, I will try and post an update everyday as well (and yes, I pretty much sit by my door and wait for the postman after school ) Here’s hoping that we both get good news tomorrow!

Hey LitWit- Congrats on the gift money! Thanks so much for the info and same to you cbear- I will check in again tomorrow- crossing fingers and toes!
