Applying to LMU and UOH

Ok so i'm planning to apply to Loyola Marymount University (1st choice) and University of Hawaii Manoa (2nd choice) for 2012 Fall as a transfer student. (I know the application date is due a long time from now but I'm kind of worried) SO my concern is my GPA (3.2 without remedial classes 3.5 with remedial) and that I have no EC's besides kickboxing and only ~40 hours of volunteer work I did in highschool. I also know that my major also impacts my acceptance which is another one of my concerns. I'm debating whether or not if I should apply as a Business major or a Computer Science major I feel I can do both, but my concern is which will most likely get me into the school? Do I have a chance in getting in these schools with my unimpressive resume?

bumping this

Are those the only 2 schools that you’re applying to? If so, why?

Will your parents pay for all the costs? If not, you need to add more schools. Neither of those schools will give you much aid as a transfer student.

But, if your parents will pay for wherever you go, you have a good shot.

Well those are the two main choices because of the area/people. I’m a California resident, so I kind of want to be in an environment where I feel like I’m home. I only have 30 units at the moment, which is why i’m only applying to private institutions at the moment. (Contemplating on whether or not if I should apply to USC and Pepperdine I didn’t get a good vibe there) My other plan was if I did not get admitted for next fall, I’d stay an extra year at CC and apply to:UCSB, UCD, UCI, SLO, CSULB, and SDSU. However, I’m trying to get away from home as fast as possible! :stuck_out_tongue: Also, I’m not familiar with financial aid, I was planning on taking out huge loans. Sorry, I’m clueless, can you tell me where I can find out more about the financial aid services? And can you suggest some institutions that provide more aid?

it seems like we are almost in the same exact boat! i want to apply to same schools as well. however, i have around 34 units with a 3.45 and i am applying to your ucs listed this fall for admission of fall '12. 30 units is enough for the ucs. you should apply. you never know. at worst you stay another year like you had already planned to do.

hey i had some questions about manoa as well. have you visited the campus? if so what do you like about the school? i have been to kaui and maui several times absolutely love the island vibes. uh would be one of my back up schools but i would like to hear more about it.

I see, but I have not taken my SAT’s so this would not qualify me to apply for any of the UC’s until I have 60 units. And no I have not visited the actual campus, but I do have family and friends on the same island who have went there. They’ve all said good things about it, but it could be a biased opinion since they are locals. (Small classes, small campus, close community) The reason I would go there is for the area, it would be an awesome place to be for college. Oahu is my favorite island, many things to do there along with the nice weather :D

*Also, I’m not familiar with financial aid, I was planning on taking out huge loans. Sorry, I’m clueless, can you tell me where I can find out more about the financial aid services? And can you suggest some institutions that provide more aid? *

Not only are “huge loans” a VERY HORRIBLE idea, you can’t borrow huge loans…no one would lend you large amounts of money.

These are the amounts that YOU can borrow…

frosh 5500
soph 6500
jr 7500
sr 7500

These are determined amounts because newish grads have a hard time paying back larger amounts.

To borrow more than that would require your parents to be involved. THEY would have to borrow larger amounts…or they would have to qualify to co-sign loans for you…which most parents won’t do because they would be liable.

HOw much do you think you’d be earning upon graduation?

*And can you suggest some institutions that provide more aid? *

The UCs do give aid to those who are low income and who transfer from UCs.

Few schools give great aid to transfers…Cornell does…don’t know many.

How much will your family pay?

Well, what if I got a student loan? (stafford) and then if that doesn’t pay for the whole thing… then a private loan on top of the student loan? My family will be willing to pay for the whole thing, but I’d rather do it on my own. And I know that entry-level jobs are not high paying jobs but I’d expect to be able to pay off my loans with time.

The Stafford loan amounts are the ones I listed in the above post that I wrote…

*hen a private loan on top of the student loan? My family will be willing to pay for the whole thing, but I’d rather do it on my own. And I know that entry-level jobs are not high paying jobs but I’d expect to be able to pay off my loans with time. *

You can’t take out a private loan without co-signers.

If your family will pay then let them pay. It is HIGHLY unlikely that you could earn enough to pay big loans off AND pay for your daily expenses…rent, food, car, etc.

What if I have credit? Would I need co-signers? Well, wouldn’t I pay based on my salary monthly so that I could afford my daily expenses?

You may also want to take a look at this list of regional universities for best value schools to compare cost if you’re considering LMU, which is a private school. The four best value schools listed in CA are Redlands, Mills, Chapman, and Point Loma.

If cost is a major issue, it’d be wise to stay in CC to fulfill all of your GE requirements before transferring.

OCELITE and Mom2 are giving you good advice. Your best financial move is to finish credits and transfer to a 4 year California school. Do not take out huge loans for a private school, there are plenty of good Cal. publics for business or computer science. You should cast a wider net for privates in California, but realistically even those best value schools (biggest average discounts on their tuition) are for high value Freshman admits, and rarely are that generous to transfers. What is Hawaii Manoa’s out of state COA? Does it compete with the current and projected tuition increases for Cal publics?

Theres a program at the community college where I get the in-state tuition for UoH ($9,000), which is great for me! The thing I really like about private institutions are that they have smaller classes which mean more time with students. and I hear private institutions are better for networking is this true? If not, which schools would you reccommend? (CAL, UC) Would Chapman or Redlands be worth the tuition since they ranked lower than LMU?

I agree with you that the private schools do have smaller class sizes. Therefore, you’ll get to know your professors and the students in your classes on a more personal level. This is one of the reasons why my own kid chose Chapman in addition to their great merit-aid and grant programs, and among other things like great location, excellent academic programs, world-class professors, great facilities, etc. If rankings matter to you, then take notice that Chapman has been on the rise in rankings in addition to the list of up-and-coming schools. Whether a school is ranked #4, or #7, or #11, it’s relatively close. It’s the right fit that matter. These are all great schools. To determine which school is right for you, you’ll need to do the research. It’s best to go visit the schools in order to compare. Make a list of questions to bring with you. Best of luck in your search!

Thank you Ocelite, I have noticed that the Chapman tuition is higher than LMU’s, will the aid program defeat it’s purpose? (40k compared to 36k) Or will it not matter as much?

Here are the Chapman links that you can obtain scholarships information. Look under transfers. Hope this helps.

Do you think I would be able to make it into LMU, UoH, or Chapman with what I got?
