Applying to McGill

Does anyone know when I can start to apply to McGill for fall 2020? Also, if applications are based solely on test scores, then how does the school choose who to admit and who to reject?
Thanks!

I just took a quick look at the McGill web site, and at least to me it looks as if you could probably apply now if you want to. My understanding is that you will need to set up a Minerva account. This seemed easy to do when a daughter applied a few years ago. In our experience, if your test scores and grades are very strong and you apply early, then you are likely to hear back relatively early in the process. If you are closer to their cutoff, then it might take longer to hear back.

If you are applying from the US or from Canada, then your grades from high school will matter quite a bit. Your two most recent years that you have completed at the time of your application (for most students grades 10 and 11) is what they will care about. I am not sure whether or not students who are “close to the cutoff” will need to submit senior year mid-term grades.

If your high school grades and your test scores are strong, then your chances are excellent. However, you should be aware that McGill is academically very challenging and classes and exams will be demanding.

If you are an American admission is based solely on ACT/SAT scores and unweighted GPA. There are published minimum requirements on their website. They admit from the top down. The closer you are to the minima the longer it will take to get a decision regardless of when you apply.

If you are from overseas then admission is based on grades in secondary school and any national exams theat may exist.

If you are more than a smidge below the minima then it will be an automatic rejection.

Does anyone know just how early the first round of acceptances come out? December?

Also, do US students tend to hear later??

The first round of US acceptances generally come out around December 1st. The last round about May 1st.

Could anybody advise what link is the application available.
Thanks

if i have a b+ in 10th grade english, but far exceed the testing requirements and have A’s in both math and english for 11th grade, should i consider applying?

@candle073 It would depend on the program that you are applying for: https://www.mcgill.ca/applying/requirements/usa
If the more selective programs (Desautels, science, engineering) it woul make Mcgill a reach.

Thanks for the link.

“if i have a b+ in 10th grade english, but far exceed the testing requirements and have A’s in both math and english for 11th grade, should i consider applying”

I would not worry about one B+. I know many students who were accepted to McGill and nearly all had at least one or two B+'s grades (or worse) somewhere along the way. Knowing your chances would require more information.

I believe that McGill also pays attention to the rigor of your HS classes. It is also common for an early acceptance( they don’t have a formal ED or EA, to my knowledge) to be provisional upon your first term Senior, and often second term, mid-term, marks.
It also depends on what faculty you are applying to.

Applications were available Sept 1st. You can apply right away and submit other documents later (you have till January) but they will typically want to wait for your 1st quarter grades to make a decision unless you had a perfect score or GPA (in which case you might get a response sooner). Candle73, I agree with above comments…it depends on what program you are applying for and what the rest of your scores look like. If you are applying for Arts, and your test scores are high, you are fine. If it’s Arts and Science they specify a minimum of A- for English. You can still be considered but it will depend the grades of the other students also applying from the U.S.

For the record, my D18 had a perfect gpa with many APs, and they still wanted to see her first semester grades before admitting her.

Hi !
I am an international student hoping to study at McGill for computer Engineering. What chances do I have considering the following profile.
SAT 1: 1420 ( RW: 660; MATH: 760)
SAT 2 PHYISCS: 730 but not needed for UC’s
GPA: 4/4 for all 3 years of coursework (12th grade results won’t be out before application deadline)

EC:

  1. Lead Guitarist of the school rock band performing at National Competitions for 2 years, finishing 1st and 3rd respectively. Also performed at an even that had schools from foreign countries.
  2. Leader of the school Cricket team, the most competitive sport of my city. finished a close second from a pool of around 75 teams. Also won 3 trophies in different competitions.
  3. Designed a motion detection rover for disaster and calamities/ security . Won the best project prize at school’s biennial science exhibition. Designing included experience with circuits and coding.
  4. Volunteer work of over 60 hours by being part of school’s social service club and also on a personal level, providing meals for underprivileged every 6 months.
  5. Also participated in olympiads and other national competition. Won a gold medal at National Cyber Olympiad but way back in 2013.
  6. Learnt to code in QBasic, C++, Visual Basic, Arduino IDE. Also have my own blog talking about technology.

Other:
Asian, parents can afford Mcgill.

If you are American your reading score on the SAT is below the 700 minimum cutoff. You will also need a second subject test. If you are not American the SAT is irrelevant. In either case EC’s are not considered in admission.

Have a question re my son’s application. He was hoping to submit early so he could get a decision by December to take the pressure off. His grades and test scores are stellar.

But we may have run into a snag. He is doing dual enrollment at a local college this year, and after submitting the application, it says that it requires a transcript from the college.

But he won’t have the transcript until December, which defeats the whole point of applying early. Is there any way to get McGill to remove this from consideration?

@hebegebe Those applicants who are admitted in December have top stats (e.g. 3.9 UWGPA and 35 ACT) through Grade 11. McGill feels that they do not need to see first semester grade 12 results, neither high school transcips nor college transcript. I would call Service Point to confirm.

Thanks @TomSrOfBoston,

He meets the GPA and testing criteria. My concern was that McGill wouldn’t look at it because it would be considered an incomplete application without the college transcript.

Anyway the test scores still need to be sent, which will happen tomorrow. I will have him follow up with McGill in a couple of weeks to see if they will waive the college transcript.
